The Sigma 17-50mm f/2.8 EX DC OS HSM Lens features a nice range of focal lengths, a wide f/2.8 aperture, HSM autofocus and OS (optical stabilization) in a well-built and reasonably-priced lens.

Gary Wolstenholme takes a look at Sigma's flagship standard zoom for APS-C digital SLR cameras. Sigma's 17-50mm f/2.8 EX DC OS HSM costs around £590 and is available for Sigma, Canon, Nikon, Sony and Pentax SLR cameras that have an APS-C or smaller sized sensor.

Whether you’re buying your first DSLR and want to upgrade the standard zoom kit lens to something a bit more special, or a DSLR owner looking to build a lens collection, the Sigma 17-50mm f/2.8 EX DC OS HSM is a good place to start .

  • +

Constant aperture of f/2.8, Smooth zooming action, Delivers excellent results

  • -

Manual focus ring is fiddly, All-plastic outer construction, Resolution tails off above f/11

The Sigma AF 17-50mm f/2.8 EX DC HSM OS is a highly competitive APS-C standard zoom lens and Sigma's best product in this class so far. It's not a flawless lens, though, but none really is.

Reading our test you can see very clearly that the Sigma entered the segment of more expensive fast zoom lenses, aimed at ambitious amateur photographers or even professionals working with smaller sensors, very aggressively indeed. The performance of the tested lens is sometimes really impressive.

  • +

high build quality and very solid barrel,, sensational sharpness of images in the frame centre even at the maximum relative aperture,, decent image quality at the edge of the frame,, chromatic aberration well-controlled at longer focal lengths,, negligible astigmatism,, silent, quick and accurate...

  • -

noticeable chromatic aberration at the shortest focal length,, a bit too high vignetting,, significant coma at 17 mm,, too simplified manual focus ring,, image quality at the maximum aperture, at the edge of the frame for shorter focal lengths could have been better.

This lens performs like my 50mm 1.8/f prime lens, but with the ability for zoom in and out. This is exactly what I needed and I'm so glad that a friend recommended it to me. It's so clear, has excellent bokeh, and feels very solid. I never leave home without it.

I did a lot of research on lenses. I am an amateur photographer with limited funds. I received as a gift a Nikon D3200 this past December which came with two standard lenses. For now this is a hobby so needless to say I wanted to get a lens that would be benefit me financially.

For shooting video this is my go to lens. I use it for probably 80% of the stuff that I shoot. The Tamron equivalent is also optically nice but the build quality doesn't feel nearly as sturdy/smooth as the Sigma and as I'm shooting video on Canon bodies the fact that the Tamron is backwards is a big...

This lens made me a Sigma follower. I got it for an unbelievable 250 on a fair and I bought it knowing I could sell it if it wouldn\'t work for me. I spent half an hour of automatic AFMA using Magic Lantern on my 7D and the result is just awesome (-2 correction).

  • +

Fast, snappy, perfect colors, a real workhorse.

  • -

The Lenscap doesn\'t snap in place quickly, and the rotating focus ring is somewhat strange at times.

I bought this lens mainly for indoor (low light) situation and for the case when I would like to have small DoF. I use it with a Nikon D5500 and I can only compare it to the Nikon 18-140 lens, which is my other lens in this focal range. The quality of the Sigma is nothing special, seems to me solid.

Bought this to go with my new Canon Eos 760d as an upgrade from the Canon lens 18-55mm that came with my previous camera. I haven't been able to test it thoroughly yet but already the results are sharper and brighter. I can't wait to try it out properly and I don't think i will regret the upgrade.
