While no lens of this power is going to be compact, the Sigma is as light and short as you could reasonably expect. Like any long, weighty telephoto, ideally you would always combine this lens with the stability of a support. This isn’t always practical, though, particularly when shooting wildlife.

I do not currently plan to create a full text review for the Sigma 120-400mm f/4.5-5.6 DG OS HSM Lens, but the full array of standardized tests are available for your own evaluation and comparison with similar lenses.

Gary Wolstenholme takes a look at this 3.3x super-telephoto zoom from Sigma with optical stabilisation.

  • +

Priced well, Good build quality, Optical Stabilisation, Silent focusing with full-time manual override

  • -

Prone to flare when used without the supplied lens hood, Loose zoom mechanism suffers with zoom creep, Hunts for focus in low light conditions

The Sigma AF 120-400mm f/4.5-5.6 DG HSM OS is a consumer grade tele zoom lens with a relatively decent albeit not spectacular performance. The resolution figures are generally fine in the image center whereas the borders/corners are just soso in the lower part of the zoom range.

A close cousin to the APO 150-500mm F5-6.3 DG OS HSM lens, which has also been reviewed on the Photo Review website, Sigma's APO 120-400mm F4.5-5.6 DG OS HSM lens can be used on both 'full frame' and 'APS-C-sized' DLSR cameras as well as traditional 35mm SLRs.

More than happy with this lens. I did a lot of searching around to find something in my price range that still had image stabilization. If I had a 2k budget I would have gone with the canon but I can't imagine spending that kind of money after spending an afternoon with this lens.

Not a bad lens for the money this Sigma can be quite sharp and reasonably quick to focus if you know how to use it and your camera to their maximum potential. This is not a point and shoot type of lens , it does require your input to get the best out of it.I found it quite heavy when lugging it all...

  • +

Cost effective., High build quality., Smooth focusing., Quiet, accurate HSM AF motor., Great adjustable tripod leg mounting shoe., Zoom creep lock.

  • -

Soft wide open at maximum zoom/aperture., Heavy., Autofocus can hunt a bi,t but once locked on to the general target area is very fast.

The OS takes some time of getting use to anything else my wild life/surfing pictures are really great.

Price, Sharp, and Over all Performance. I bought the Canon 100-400mm F/4L but returned it after 4days when my friend recommended my this lens and never looked back

I had the exact same lens and dropped it a couple of times - and it still worked for 18 more months. I bought this same lens again to replace it - takes great photos.

After lots of thought and research I went ahead and made this purchase. For outdoor sports, events and nature pictures......you can't beat this. The zooming motion at the end of the lens was an adjustment. The reach vs the 70-200 allows me to be closer to the action without getting closer.
