One way to create differentiating photographs is to use an extreme lens. While the Sigma 12-24mm f/4.5-5.6 DG II HSM Lens' max apertures are not close to being considered extreme, its incredibly wide full-frame focal lengths are.
The Sigma 12-24 mm is undoubtedly a unique lens; if you need such wide angles of view and, at the same time, if you want to avoid a „fisheye” type of instrument you will have no choice. The problem is that currently for such a price you could and should expect more.
compact and solidly made casing of the lens,, good image quality in the frame centre,, sensibly low distortion, taking into accoun the angles of view,, decently corrected coma,, not very high astigmatism,, silent, quick and efficient autofocus.
weak image quality on the edge of full frame,, high vignetting visible even on the smaller detector,, a lot of problems with the work against bright light,, noticeable chromatic aberration on shorter focal lengths,, no posibility to use filters.
Every now and then, a third party lens is actually all-around better than Nikon's own lenses and this is one of them. This is some great glass for full-frame Nikon cameras. I use mine on the D600. A little soft in the corners at 12, it is none-the-less still usable there.
I bought this lens to fill out my focal range and I wasn't sure if a super-wide zoom would be that useful to me (so I didn't go for the super expensive Nikkor 14-24 f/2.8). Having never owned anything wider than a 24-70 full frame lens I was a little slow getting the hang of this lens.
• Love the 12mm wide end on both full frame and crop sensor bodies., • Solid build, • Great on my D7100, • Fast Focus
• Some flare when shooting into the sun, not unexpected though., • Occasionally -- misscommunicates with my D700 and gives me an aperture reading of F99 (just turn off the camera and back on to clear the error).
Fantastic image quality, and angle. Definitely recommend.
I have never bought a lens that wouldn't allow the use of at least a UV/Haze filter. This lens doesn't have the capability of allowing any filters. Going back tomorrow. Don't care how much more Nikon's lens is but this is just stupid.
Rather than spending a lot of money for the highly recommended Nikon super wide or the Canon, I opted for this model. This gives me the opportunity to experiment with wide angle photography to see if I like it and how much I will use a wide angle lens before committing to a more expensive lens.
Well, after getting the first copy of this in non working condition, I tried a second copy. I am happy to say, this one is very good. PROS: Solid build, very smooth and well damped focus and zoom rings, small for what it does, great sharpness across most of the frame, fast and accurate AF...
Very pleased with this lens. The images always need a little post work, but the extra width makes it worthwhile. (Update) - Love it (Another update - I still love it, just be careful the objects in the foreground.
I'm loving this lens so far. I've only used this with my Canon T2i so I'm not getting the full view yet, but planning on being impressed when I move to the 6D later this year. Update: I've now moved to the 6D and I am still in love with this lens.
I work everyday doing Japanese weddings. I used to use nikon's 14-24...but dropped it twice and had it service twice it was expensive...so decided to get this as back up...wow i was surprised...Sharp and very fast focus. Fast enough that i can have brides & grooms running with me and hold focus..
This is the best lens and the envy of the others when shooting in tight spaces. I am able to get group shots from just 5 ft away!
