Focus is confirmed well and without hesitation, while the distance window displays both distance and magnification clearly. On such a long lens the manual focusing ring is quite a fair distance away from the camera body, which makes using it while supporting the camera a little tricky.

Speaking to the guys here ... If you buy a macro lens, you will want to get your wife flowers. If you get your wife flowers, she will be happy. And if your lens makes your wife happy, she will want you to buy more lenses. You can see the perfect win-win circle forming here.

A ruggedly constructed, large-aperture, full-frame, image-stabilized, 1:1 close-up lens, this medium telephoto prime ($970, street) converts up to about 150mm on Sigma’s SD1, as well as on most DSLR cameras with APS-C sensors. Its attractions include a nonrotating barrel suitable for lens-mounted...

I use it mostly outdoors for insects, small flowers, dew drops, frost etc. Coming from the "old school" I always used tripod. Until I tried the Sigma with two levels of image stabilization and focus limits. I have great results handheld at 1/50s.

Image quality is good. Bokeh is good - not great, but then neither is the Nikon 105. Chromatic aberration is non-existent.Autofocus is slow, though. Slower than the Nikon 105, and much slower than a pro Nikon lens. Though this is not surprising for a macro lens.

  • +

Accurate autofocus, Consistent Output, Durable, High resolution, Strong Construction

Average Vr, Poor manual focus, Slow Focus

This is more of a review of the kit than the lens itself. If you want to know about the lens, there's a bunch of web sites that do detailed tests of this macro lens. I personally love the lens, and believe it's worth the price. But to basically get a giant box of extras for free?
