Your search for affordable recording/mastering-grade headphones should begin with the excellent Sennheiser HD 280 Pro, a modern classic.

  • +

Accurate, clean audio performance across the full frequency range. Comfortable, secure fit for long listening sessions. Durable. Passively reduces ambient noise significantly.

  • -

Cable is not detachable. More appropriate for professional/studio use than personal listening.

Sennheiser’s HD 280s are a perennial favorite among budget-minded audiophiles. And listening to their balanced, flat tonal presentation you can see why. If there’s any hint of coloration (anywhere), I certainly couldn’t find it. That’s great if you happen to be mixing an album.

  • +

Goodbye outside world. Bested even the Marleys in sound isolation thanks to some seriously aggressive head hugging force. Travel- ready fold-up design. Made in Germany, but with a sound signature from Switzerland.

  • -

Ugg-lay! A certified head crusher—until we finally broke them in. Noticeable lack of detail at the extreme ends of the tonal range. Non- detachable 10-foot cord is a literal drag.

At a reasonable rate of £115.00 the Sennheiser HD 280 Pro Headphones are the best buy and quite difficult to surpass in terms of quality and sound clarity.

  • +

Comfortable. Light-weight. Durable, can last for years if maintained.

  • -

    Cord is short.

There are some diamonds in the rough of the sub-$100 price point; the HD 280 Pros are not one of them.

Sennheiser's versatile headphones sound great on DVDs and all kinds of music.

  • +

Lightweight and comfortable design; sealed ear cups isolate wearer from ambient noise; headphones fold for compact storage.

  • -

    Pricey.

These are very well-made and most comfortable headphones I have ever worn and can wear them for hours while twiddling and tweaking parameters in wee hours of night without neighbors thinking aliens have landed.

Overall, these headphones have been outstanding and I am very happy with them. They have gotten many hours of use over the last 2 years, and they have been completely reliable with no degradation in sound quality or comfort.

Still, though, if you'd like some packable, wearable, isolating,good-sounding 'phones for the office, LAN party, crèche, server room orlong train trip, you could do a lot worse than check the HD 280 Pro out.

Over the past couple of weeks I have been playing with the Sennheiser HD280 Pro Headphones. These are some fairly heavy duty professional monitor headphones offering reasonable attenuation of background noise and a very visually uninspiring brick-outhouse build quality that boasts user-serviceable...

The Sennheiser HD280 headphones have a frequency response of 8Hz – 25000 kHz. Not only that, but they offer an impedance of 64 ohm and a sensitivity of 113 dB. These are the perfect headphones for all of your studio needs.

As advertised, the Sennheiser HD 280 Pro headphones deliver linear sound. They are comfortable to wear for long periods. Excellent performers for the money.

  • +

Linear sound - you will hear deep bass only when it is in the recording. Pleasantly detailed in the mid and high frequencies.

  • -

Although the coiled cable is great for stationary equipment, it doesn't work too well with light weight players.

I bought these a little over two years ago but I hardly used them. Probably just a few hours total. They sounded nice but they are failing. I'm just out of warranty by a couple weeks and now they've developed a problem where the right speaker is losing sound.

These headphones sound great especially for the cost, I own 2 pairs now, and will be getting 2 more in the near future. Sound great with with my Roland TD-25KV drums patch through with a Tascam DP-32 mixer connected to a ART HeadAMP6 Pro 6-Channel Headphone Amplifier connected to an Avid Eleven Rack...

I can say I have tested a LOT of headphones: Kenwood HC-5, Heil PRO 7, Heil Proset Plus, Heil Proset Elite, Bose QC 25, Bose QC 35, Yamaha CM-500, Sennheiser HD-598, Philips Fidelio L2, Philips Fidelio X1, ... etc.

Would recommend to anyone looking for a great pair of professional headphones for $100.

  • +

Beautiful sound and no shortage of bass.

  • -

A little bulky, but all the over ear headphones in this range are.

I was amazed at the sound improvement between these headphones and my previous ones. I believe the noise cancellation aspect of these headphones is under promoted as it seems to cancel out most of my household ambient noise. They are sturdy and a bit heavy but the quality of sound is amazing.

The 280 pro as a great value headphone, but it does have a few problems. First, the bass extends very low, but it's not very strong - it does respond well to equalisation though. Second, the highs can be a bit harsh/grating - the highs extend very high.

First and foremost I bought these to supress sound in an office environment. I don't like active noise cancellation (annoying hiss) and while not Bose QC's, these get the job done. As for the sound quality, The lows are nonexistent.
