The Seagate NAS HDD comes in capacities up to 4TB and includes specially designed firmware that is engineered to deliver greater reliability and performance to provide consumers with assurance when they select drives with which to populate their new NAS.

Higher mixed workload and sequential throughput than WD Red, Greatest capacity in NAS HDD segment, Better latency consistency in mixed workloads than WD Red

Back of the group random 4k max latency in write activity
The Seagate NAS HDD 4TB is another high capacity drive that puts performance on the back burner to achieve quiet, low vibration, and energy efficient operation. Its obvious competitor is the WD Red 4TB which offers many of the same features. The Red edges forward in a very close race.
Though it doesn't perform like a standard drive suitable to be paired with an OS for your primary use, but has all the near-enterprise functionality of a NAS good enough for SOHO use. Best part is that its able to keep up with WD Red 2TB version. Not bad for a 4TB counterpart from Seagate!
The arena for NAS-targeted hard drives has just welcomed a second combatant: Seagate's

Fantastic performance for a ~5,900 RPM hard drive., Only 4TB option for NAS-specific models (your move, WD)., 3-year warranty.

A bit more expensive than WD’s Red (2TB and 3TB). Seagate’s drives are newer; pricing will go down.
Retailing for about $160 at press time, the popular Seagate NAS HDD 4TB has one huge advantage under its belt: Price. In today's review, we are stacking the ST4000VN000 against the $180 Western Digital Red 4TB and $185 HGST Deskstar NAS 4TB .
With the NAS HDD series, Seagate now has hard disks that are optimised for use in NAS devices just like the Western Digital Red disks. The fact that they're in TLER mode by default is important for NAS devices, and it's also positive that Seagate tests the disks with all the major NAS devices.
Seagate takes purpose built NAS storage to the next level with an insane 4TB capacity.
The Seagate NAS is a very quiet and low consumption hard-disk drive that looks ideal for desktop NAS and RAID use. It currently costs about the same as its competitor from WD, and while some benchmark tests suggested it has a slightly slower top speed, in practical use this should not be a limit...
I have 6 of these in a FreeNAS box setup as a RAIDz2 and they have been doing great so far. Never had an DOAs. My server runs for 24/7 and they have been going strong for about 4-5 months at this point; time will tell on reliability but so far no complaints.

- formatted as expected - price (got them on sale!) - performance is on par with what is advertised
-
-
- slightly higher power draw than WD Reds
I got a pair of these drives two years ago and they are still going strong in a RAID 1 setup (RAW image and video storage). They might not be the fastest drives out there, but they are great storage/NAS drives.

Good RAID drives for external storage, Been trouble free for two years now

A little noisy, but not overly so
Seagate my make of choice, bought 4 of these for a NAS and they are very quiet, set up as RAID 5, all drives individually packed to offer very good protection during delivery, would recommend
Got this for $158.88 from another chain clearance sale. Seagate has the Ironwolf series replacing this. Works fine in my DS413.

Nothing but the drive is included in this SKU; no screws, no cables, no rails, no software. Just the bare drive.

Unlike Desktop class drives, these NAS class drives are designed to work with RAID controllers and have timings to avoid unnecessary array resets / rebuilds.

I have a home server, it has VMs for thinks like MythTV and serves Apple acceptable f/s and media. These drives formed the next wave of storage for a RAID pool. They've given no trouble and have been in use as long as the power is available since purchase.
-

Higher capacity than drives I had in the RAID pool previously. 4K blocks. S.M.A.R.T. data. NAS qualified.

Since HDD's for the most part are a hit or miss device as they can either work as they're supposed to or have tons of issues that hamper them, I'm very pleased I have a good HDD to pair up with my other one to work as a RAID.
