At around a third of the price of the Canon and Nikon alternatives, theSamyang 35mm f/1.4 ED AS UMCis an affordable and most importantly excellent quality alternative to the OEM offerings, that's if you can live with the lack of auto-focusing and on the Canon version the transfer of metering...
If you're looking for a sharp, moderate wide angle with a fast aperture and can live with focusing manually, you need look no further. The performance at f/1.4 is amazing for a lens that costs under £400, and this is with good build quality, low CA, distortion and falloff that is typical of lenses...
Very inexpensive, Excellent sharpness, even at f/1.4, Even better sharpness when stopped down a little, Low CA and distortion, Good build
Contrast suffers when shooting into the light
Samyang continues to surprise us regarding the quality of their recently released products. The full format Samyang 35mm f/1.4 AS UMC is capable of delivering a very high quality straight from f/1.4 - at least within the tested APS-C scope. The contrast level is a bit reduced at max.

Available in a range of mounts, and both Four Thirds and Samsung NX versions, the Samyang 35mm f/1.4 AS UMC is an attractive lens for CSC users wanting a fast prime. Samyang’s 35mm f/1.4 AS USM features a fast f/1.4 maximum aperture that’s two-thirds of a stop faster than an f/1.8.
The Samyang 35mm f/1.4 AS UMC is the company’s most expensive lens to date, but at a street price of around £320 it is only about 25% of the price of a comparable optic from the likes of Canon, Nikon and Sony. This means that the Samyang model is around £1,000 cheaper than its rivals.
Overall it is very difficult to characterise this lens. It is certainly a specialist optic on account of being manual-only, but it also looks and feels great. It’s a bit heavy but you are getting an ultra-bright f/1.4 maximum aperture and well-corrected optical performance.
Bright aperture, build quality
Weak performance at wide aperture
In this summary you can write just one thing: aces of the photographical market, it’s high time you got down to work seriously! If Samyang is able to launch a 540$ lens which, when it comes to the image quality, is only slightly worse than the Canon 35L, which can compete on equal terms with the...
very good, momentarily even splendid image quality in the frame centre,, good image quality on the edge, even on full frame,, low lateral chromatic aberration,, moderate distortion,, splendidly corrected astigmatism,, the smallest vignetting in the 1.4/35 class lenses,, decent work against bright...
visible longitudinal chromatic aberration,, noticeable coma.
In 2014, I bought the AE version of this lens as the first 35mm pairing for my Canon 6D. It quickly became my go-to lens for anything that didn't absolutely require AF. The bokeh quality, vignetting, and color rendition of this lens are unbelievable for such an affordable piece of glass.
Does not work with NIKON D7000! Will not take photo in auto or manual settings. Will not work in digital view back screen or manual view through small eye window. Will not auto focus! DO NOT BUY THIS LENS!
Really great lens as far as image quality is concerned, and a great value. This is my first fully manual lens, and I enjoy the novelty of setting the aperture and focus manually. The focus ring is a joy to use - it's very smooth and has a long range of movement.
I have had this lens for about at year. In the beginning I was disappionted with sharpness. Then I realizsed that even a manual fouuc lens needs AF-fine tune. After fine tuning it, it is a stunning change. Marvellous sharpness and great bokeh. Great for night-shots too.
I just can't get over the image quality of this lens. I shoot landscapes mainly from F5.6-11 and for my application I would have to spend $5000 on the Otus 35mm to get better image quality.
Sharp fast lens. I'd buy another.
Excellent lens, no autofocus, no VR very sharp
I am using this lens for a moment.. Yes It is manual with chip... Even sometimes doesn't confirm, it is not big issue for manual lens lovers... The good thing is, even not confirming, menus on camera and option AV / P / FULL AUTO / all works like automatic and very good result.
All I have to say is, if this lens is used correctly, stunning results can be achieved. If you don't need autofocus, this lens is definitely a great performer. Don't shy away from using manual focusing, it gets easier as you practice more; I find it quite enjoyable actually.
Love my 50mm lens but I want to get in closer to someone or something and still have that sharpness, this lens does just that for me.
