The Samyang 85mm f/1.4 Aspherical may not be the sharpest lens around but it offers a good and very affordable introduction into shallow depth-of-field photography. The resolution figures aren't overly impressive at max.
I can honestly say I am pleasantly surprised at the performance of the Samyang. If it cost 500 or 1000 $, I might have a few reasons to complain. At 299 $ I won’t say a word. It presents a very reasonable offer for less affluent portrait photographers.
Usable wide open,, Very little chromatic aberration, Practically zero distortion, Indetectible coma on the APS-C/DX matrix, Vignetting on the APS-C/DX satisfactory, Very high transmission, Decent quality of workmanship, Good price-quality ratio
After stopping down performs considerably worse than competing brands, Performance against bright light could be better, ‘Soft’ corners at full frame
The product exceeded my expectations with its quality and sharpness. After using my 50mm f/1.4 I figured it was time to get a true portrait lens and I wanted one with a shallow focus as well. So I searched and found this perfect fit. I enjoy it and love my results.
Lente muy luminoso, ideal para retratos. Su "punto dulce" se encuentra en F5.6. Excelente relación costo/beneficio. Very fast lens, great for portraits. The "sweet point" you will find it at F5.6. Excellent cost/benefit relation.
This is an awesome lens. Good bokeh, sharp images and wonderful built quality. The aperture ring is sturdy but smooth, focusing is easy, and the images are superb even when wide open.
Awesome clarity, take a while to get used to- all manual. But the sharpness is fantastic.
Keep in mind that it is a manual lens. If you are spoiled by auto this will take you back to the last century. On my A7ii, I set it to A(aperture) and auto ISO. It will require care and practice to get the in focus plane right with focus peaking.
So far I love how easy this lens is to use, and for the price it can't be beat!
This lens is sharp as heck, and is easily the sharpest lens I have. However, the quality doesn't compare to some of my other manual focus lenses, such as my Voigtlanders, for example.
Pictures are crisp. Boka is exceptional.
I have used this lens now for 2 years. I was very enthusiast at first, but was then too often disappointed by the results. Up to the point that I do not care much for it anymore. Pros: At F/1.4 this lens is sharp. Really sharp, even better than the Zeiss Planar 85 1.4!
Use this lens with Gx7, so IBIS helps in hand holding and hand holding lens is not a problem. Lens is very sharp and fast so you might want to consider getting a neutral density filter to go with it.
