The Rokinon 85mm f1.2 SP lens is an almost perfect lens. For portrait photographers, it encourages us to sit there and create rather than capture and collaborate necessarily. If you’re a medium format film shooting, then you’ll get this perfect.
Where I see a lens like this really being used is for creative work–and by that I mean the process of creating an image vs capturing one. It’s a slow process that ultimately yields you a better photo and less photos overall.
Except for the lack of weather sealingnot even a gasket on the mountthe build quality feels nearly unmatched. Although the lens is manual focus only, it doesunlike the earlier Samyang/Rokinon lenseselectronically communicate with the camera body.
For Sony A7-series cameras owners. I'm using this lens with Sigma MC-11 adapter on Sony A7 camera. It seems to work fine including an electronic aperture control on the camera body. Same as Canon cameras. I had Mitakon 85mm f1.2 and also have couple 85mm f1.4 lenses.
I borrowed canon's 85mm F1.2L ii lens for a while and hoped to buy one. I ended up getting this one instead, and it completely destroys canon's. Don't let the manual focus scare you if you're used to auto focus.
Lens is nicely crafter and well built. I enjoy the manual focus with the audio focus confirm. The images are very sharp and accentuated by the very shallow depth of field when the lens is used wide or nearly wide open.
It is indeed sharp, but the more important is very sensible focusing than any lens I ever used. Color rendition and sharpness is as great as I expected from the lens (Samyang XP = Rokinon SP series). Sigma Art lens is incredibly sharp, but focusing issue in many case and situation, so unreliable.
This is all about the rendering. If you're looking for a lens for portrait photography or want to produce images with extreme shallow depth of field, this is worthy of strong consideration. The Boca is rendered beautifully with out of focus areas rented beautifully smooth.
