Anyone looking to purchase the Ricoh Theta 3D Spherical digital camera will want to consider the cost, image quality, and limited capabilities before jumping in.

  • +

    Lightweight, Offers unique images

  • -

Price, Limited use, Average image quality

The Ricoh Theta is compact camera that captures unique 360° spherical images, but it's on the pricey side and battery life is disappointing.

  • +

Captures unique 360-degree images. Wi-Fi is supported. Android and iOS compatibility. Very compact.

  • -

Pricey. Very limited battery life. Image quality isn't the greatest.

26 February 2016

In a few years from now, cameras like the Ricoh Theta S will be standard. Maybe not even a few years. Maybe this year. Samsung just released their VR camera, the [Gear 360] , and LG just released a VR camera called [LG 360 CAM] as well. LG’s camera is, shall we say, very INSPIRED by Ricoh’s design.

The Ricoh Theta S provides decent 360 photos and acceptable 360 video for early adopters, but it’s likely to be superseded soon.

  • +

Shoots 360-degree video at full frame rate, Easy upload to Facebook; relatively easy to YouTube, Reasonable price

  • -

Only 8GB of memory, with no removable option, Effective 360 video resolution lower than Full HD, Smartphone app essential for some functions

For the price, I’d be hoping for something more versatile than what Ricoh is offering with the Theta. I wouldn't be at all surprised if there is more in the works in this respect, but the lack of control restricts its use to perfectly lit environments to get a decent quality image.

29 December 2013

The Ricoh Theta is capable of impressive images, particularly when viewed using the interactive methods, such as on the theta360 website and desktop software. The biggest problem is the price - it is currently available for £329.99!

  • +

Unique way to take pictures, Easy to use, Images are well stitched together, Has 4Gb of internal memory

  • -

Too expensive, Image quality isn't fantastic

12 September 2013

The Ricoh Theta camera is the first mass produced snapper that takes spherical pics

  • +

Build quality and design, Interactive 360 pictures, Very easy to setup and use

  • -

Not great in low light, Quality degrades on sharing, Less interaction when shared

2 May 2014

The Ricoh Theta is a unique little camera. It's very lightweight, pocketable (in its included soft case, that is), and is very easy to use. It's more responsive than most compacts - you can turn it on and shoot pretty much right away.

  • +

Battery life, controllable w/smartphone app, decent IQ, sheer potential

  • -

Low light performance, plastic tripod mount, wifi can be finicky, cost

13 March 2015

I've been involved in 360 panoramic photography for many years. Usually the process involves a number of photographs and a lot of hoping that nothing moves in the process. Half bodies and blurred cars are often the result. With this camera you can do the same process in one click.

17 January 2017

A bit of a toy with limited real use would be great if it shot video.

13 March 2015

Well, it is one of a kind and extremely easy to use. Just screw it onto a selfie stick, decide the position and use your smartphone to click. The best way to take photospheres.

19 November 2014

I need to take photos of existing homes and businesses in order to create building plans for my design and drafting business. This camera is a god-send. With this camera I only have to go to the job site once to record existing conditions. Each photo shows a 360-degree view plus up and down.

7 November 2014

the resolution is too low, when you zoom in, it's blur

29 October 2014

Warning! This is the original Theta, not the new cheaper Theta M15 with video recording and faster wifi. (The site incorrectly links to this product page.)

5 October 2014

First 360 degree surrounding camera, lightweight, compatable with different OS. The image quality could be higher - about 10 megapixels.

22 September 2014

This camera is outstanding! It is very easy to use, and the Android app works really well with the camera.

19 September 2014

Great Product! Remember to do a firmware update for better quality photos. Note the images are not superior quality.
