If you only hooked up this speaker to an avr it would be way too loud for 90% of people. I love it myself. I've had a Polk Audio CS400 which is the same quality level as this one but 20 years older. They absolutely crush the sound.
Excellent center channel. Crafted with typical Polk quality.
I already own an Onkyo NR7100 AVR (I do use Dirac calibration). I wanted a serious upgrade to my existing 5.1 setup (Jamo S803). Polk R700 (L/R) + R400 (Center) + R200 (Surrounds) + 1 RSL Speedwoofer 12S. Room is about 22ft long x 14ft wide x 8ft tall.
One of the best equipment I ever purchased. Almost makes the sound 3D.

The R400 really changes sound. It opens the sound another level. You can hear all the highs and lows.
I got to test this speaker in a 5.1.2, My R600 are still being delivered, so my fronts are two 10 year old 4-way sony towers, I have 2 sets of Polk OWM3's as surrounds and celling mounted atmos. Onkyo receiver and I ran the room eq before playing them.
I have tried several different studio monitor setups (with and without subwoofers) and several other prosumer FrankenPatches (including floor standing speakers with subwoofer in the space you see here) for my bass guitar practice.
With the center channel being the most important in the home theater set up I chose the buy the best at polk Offered in the reserve series it brightened up the room with clarity ans bass coming from the same unit.
Make sure you check the dimensions on this big boy...I didn't, but I got lucky it it fits great in my setup. I'm very glad it did because it sounds very very nice. It replaced a smaller 20 year old Infinity CC-2 that I've grown accustomed to over that time. The CC-2 is good. The R400 is great.
