This standard 50mm lens sports a fast f/1.8 maximum aperture, ideal for blurring backgrounds, or for shooting in low light conditions. However, unlike many 'nifty-fifty' lenses, this optic carries a rather high £250 price tag. Is it worth the extra over equivalents from other manufacturers?
There's not much to add that our tests don't already show: it's an inexpensive lens that fills a gap in Pentax's lineup. Stopped down, it provides excellent results for sharpness, but many people will be buying it for its ability to shoot at Æ’/1.8, where it offers only mediocre performance.
When it comes to optics, the Pentax 1.8/50 is a very solid lens which compares favourably with its competitors. It would be difficult to find a flaw here; if only the lens performed a bit better at the maximum relative aperture and had a better coma correction, we would be completely satisfied.

excellent image quality in the frame centre,, very good image quality on the edge of the frame,, perfect correction of chromatic aberration,, negligible distortion,, very low astigmatism,, moderate vignetting,, great work against bright light,, functional manual focus ring.

too weak image quality near the maximum relative aperture,, distinct coma,, too much plastics in the casing,, disastrous autofocus,, high price.
The optical performance of this lens is excellent, which makes it well worth the £250 asking price, even if this does seem a little steep for a 50mm f/1.8 lens with a plastic lens mount. Overall this lens delivers sharp results at every aperture, and is reasonably well built.

Excellent sharpness from maximum aperture, Good build for the lens barrel, Fast focusing, Virtually no CA or distortion

A bit on the pricey side for a 50mm f/1.8, Plastic lens mount.
When stopped down to f/5.6 to f/8, this lens is sharp and contrasty to the corners of the K-1 full frame. That's a pleasant surprise given the low price.
one of the best lenses, PENTAX ever has buildt. phantastic sharpness even from f2.8 to f 6,7 excellent bokeh, very high contrast, very nice colors nearly no CA's even in extreme situations of bright light (tree against sunset) with f 6,7 I use it for macro with converter (f8-11) and star shootings...

from f2,8 very sharp, f 4-5.6 extremely sharp shootings possible
