This lens works very nicely when shooting wildlife with a Pentax K-50. I am amazed how well very tightly cropped photos hold up with this combination. Autofocus is sometimes an issue in some situations for me, but I am able to switch easily to manual focus to get the shot.I normally shoot RAW+jpeg.
Was my first purchase for the K-5. Poor lens. Avoid! Avoid! Avoid! May be cheap but it's a false economy, as most of your shots will go in the bin. While contrast is ok, and CA and flare is not excessive, getting something sharp with this lens is rare to impossible, even stopped down.
WR, price, size, useful focal range
not fast, not sharp, poor bokeh
Pentax 50-200mm f/4-5.6 ED WR Telephoto Zoom Lens is a typical kit len for Pentax K-mount DSLR products, it includes a len hood which is great for the bright light outdoor photo shooting. In addition, it is with metal mount apart from DAL lens from Pentax which is constructed with plastic mount.
Buyers, please be aware, as per another review, 'Another Deal Site' are providing cheap kit versions of this lens and not as advertised. Where the advertised lens retails for $250, the other lens only retails at $100 (Though is only meant to come with a kit).
Solid lens, as usual, I didn't expect anything less from Pentax. It has a good zoom range and it feels solid in my hands. WR is a definite plus, as the lens is best used outdoors.
let me sum it up this way first before going into the details later ...>> if you're in love with a 'fancy white' tele zoom lens (especially because of its sexy looks!) that mostly sports and wild life photographers use (and they are very good lenses btw, no doubt!
This fits my needs of taking amateur photos of wildlife. I bought it for a safari, so I practiced at the zoo in the daytime. The auto works just as good as manual, with or without flash on a near subject with an animal in the background, or a closeup of an animal such as an elephant.
I read some reviews about how bad this lens is but I decided to give it a shot anyway. I think I lucked out and got a good copy because I am very pleased with this lens. The only issue is the auto focus hunting a little. I would not discourage anyone from buying the lens on that issue though.
Sharp. great walk around lens
Wide open, it's really soft, and requires f:8 or higher to obtain clean shots, but f:11 produces cleaner shots, though this means that you need to push the ISO higher than desired which can produce noisy images.
Lightweight, WR, Focal Length
Softness, Slight CA
Solidly built long zoom lens, with a metal mount, smooth, but firm zooming, and focus shift. I hike a lot, being weather resistant is a plus.
