The full-frame Pentax K-1 is a very good camera for stills, but it’s very uneven in the video department. And some of the built-in technology is behind the competition. With that on the table, it’s hard recommending this DSLR to any shutterbug other than a Pentax devotee. You bet.

  • +

High-quality stills, 5-axis in-camera stabilization, Unique adjustable LCD

  • -

Seems dated even though it’s a 2016 model, Only 30p video, not even 60p let alone 4K

The long-awaited full-frame Pentax K-1 camera delivers superb image quality, but its frame rate and autofocus system will disappoint action photographers.

  • +

36-megapixel full-frame image sensor. Innovative controls and features. Bright optical viewfinder. Articulated rear display. 5-axis in-body image stabilization. GPS with Astrotracer. Pixel Shift high-resolution mode. Wi-Fi. Weather-sealed design. Vertical shooting grip available. Aggressive pricing.

  • -

Autofocus struggles with fast-moving subjects. Limited Raw shooting buffer. Modest 4.4fps shooting rate. So-so video quality. Omits in-camera flash.

The Pentax K-1 is a 36MP fully weather sealed, image stabilized full-frame DSLR that offers an enormous amount of features at a bargain price. Although the autofocus system fails to catch up with some of its peers the image quality that the K-1 offers is some of the best on the market and users will...

For photographers who want great photo quality for less than $2,000, the Pentax K-1 hits the bullseye.

The Pentax K-1 delivers excellent photo quality and a ton of features in a sturdy, well-designed body.

  • -

The autofocus is inconsistent and the image stabilization isn't as good as competitors'.

For its first-ever full-frame DSLR, Ricoh offers up the Pentax K-1 -- and what a beauty it is! With a superb design, features aplenty, great image quality and a solid, comfortable all-weather body, the K-1 is a no-brainer upgrade for Pentaxians looking to go full-frame.

Unlocks the full potential of full-frame Pentax lenses; Excellent image quality; Great ergonomics and build; Very compact for full-frame; Decent performance; Fast autofocus with great low-light capabilities; Very wide sensitivity range; Bright, accurate viewfinder; Articulated LCD; Stabilization,...

No built-in flash strobe; Quite heavy compared to APS-C flagships; Somewhat soft images and blown highlights by default in JPEG mode; Warm Auto white balance indoors; Slow startup and buffer clearing; Small top-deck status display; Weak viewfinder illumination; Below-average battery life for DSLR,...

At $1,796.95, the Pentax K-1 ain’t cheap but it isn’t $6500 (like the Nikon D5) either, and this Pentax camera clearly punches above its weight for the features and image quality it delivers. What’s more, the K-1 is a camera that feels a lot smarter than the average full frame DSLR.

Pentax may be late to the full-frame party, but the K-1 sure made a loud entrance. When it comes to image quality, the new Pentax K-1 boasts an unprecedented level of performance and versatility which without question secures its spot as the most powerful K-mount camera released to date.

For years, it seemed doubtful that a full-frame Pentax DSLR would ever materialise. But now that it’s here, the focus has moved to what it represents in an ever-expanding sector.

  • +

Excellent image quality; superb resolution and dynamic range, High features-to-price ratio, Excellent handling with many physical controls, One of the most flexible LCD displays around

  • -

Occasional auto white balance inconsistencies, Video options not as comprehensive as those on other cameras, Artefacts visible in certain Pixel Shift Resolution images, Continuous focus doesn’t track quite as well as other systems

The K-1 packs a full-frame sensor at a pretty bargain price, so there’s no major surprise that it’s not the perfect all-rounder.

I was interested in the Pentax K1 since it first came out. I finally bought one in December 2017. I had been using Canon for over 2 decades. Starting on film and ending on full frame digital with L series glass.

I already have Canon 5D classic, Sony A7 and Kodak Pro 14n, and I wanted to get a full frame by Pentax, the K1 was and is the obvious answer to me.

30+ years Pentax user here. The K-1 is my 3rd Pentax digital camera. Positives are image quality, price point for full frame, and the wide variety of older lenses I can use or adapt. A minor negative is that the camera + lens weight is often a little much for casual shooting without a tripod.

I have been shooting cameras for over 20 years but this is my first fullframe camera (other than SLR / film). To be honest I thought it unlikely that I would ever be able to justify the cost of moving to full frame but the K-1 changed my mind!

I've been waiting for a Pentax full frame for a while. I'm upgrading from a K5 which I love. This camera is everything I imagined and more. Still learning how to use all the functions.

I have owned the K-1 for about a year and love it. It is extremely well built, east to operate and takes great pictures. Pros: 1. It is an engineer's dream come true and obviously they were given full leeway in design and functionality.

I just couldn't put the camera down. You will try to carry it to anywhere. This will reignite your passion for photography again because it captures exactly how you have pictured it inside your heart...maybe even better. Everything is so intuitive in this camera...no user manual is necessary..

I have waited some time to get my first full frame DSLR and it is a revelation, even though I have had a KM & a K7, the K1 is a major step forward in quality and functionality. I really enjoy the feel and operation of this camera, but software and image quality are a different story. My first K-1 lasted a few months before it just stopped saving images — if I took fifty pictures it might save the first 3.

I started with K10D back in 2006. Throughout the years I have had K20D, K-7, K-5, and K-3. There were all great cameras and I have witnessed the improvements that Pentax has been implemented from users' feedbacks. When I got my K-1 back in October, I was blown away.
