The 4K Optoma UHD55 is equal parts gaming and home entertainment projector, thanks to a short input lag combined with a high quality image.

  • +

4K UHD resolution, Full HD 3D, HDR10 and HLG HDR support, Bright enough for a room with ambient light, Good out-of-box color accuracy, Short input lag

  • -

Only one of the two HDMI ports offers the short input lag, Limited number of streaming apps

A while ago I told you about a new small portable projector from Acer whose internal battery had enough power to show a couple of videos back to back. Here I get to try a full size offering from Optoma one of the leaders in projector technology.

We've kept you waiting until the second page, so let's cut to the chase: the UHD550X can deliver delightful 4K visuals. The image quality belies the price tag, and there's good reason to consider this projector as an affordable upgrade from an ageing 1080p unit.

  • +

4K and HDR for under £2,000, Competent HD upscaling, HDMI 2.0 with HDCP 2.2, Image size dwarfs any current TV

  • -

Contrast could be better, Big and bulky chassis, Doesn't support 3D

While occasionally great, the UHD55 lacks the sort of consistency required for a truly immersive home entertainment experience Bright and colourful HDR Fast response time for gaming Optical vertical lens shift Below par native black levels Light instability in dynamic modes Unoptimised streaming...

Upgraded from a 15-yr old projector. Using mainly for movies and TV through Roku. Brightness and contrast are good with medium ambient light. Not amazing but definitely watchable. Sometimes loses connectivity to Roku despite HDMI connection.

This is my second projector upgrade. I moved to my new house and was unable to set up a normal ceiling mounted projector. So I started checking out the ultra short throw units. I went with this Optoma 1080 ultra short throw unit unit. I have it paired with a Silver Ticket 92” screen.

No one is mentioning the light border. Once set up... There is still a fixed light border that is not part of the image, yet is light enough to show. So, going left to right. Wall, light border, screen border, screen (as seen in pic 2 and even the bottom border on pic 1) I might be able to forgive...

This unit gives a nice sharp picture, however the colors seem just a little off and no amount of adjustment seems to fix this. The brightness is wonderful with lights on and you can see the image clearly. The images have a slight greenish hue sometimes and I keep it in game or cinema mode.

Went through several cheaper projectors, trying to find one good enough for me without spending a lot.. every one I got, I stepped up in price and theoretically quality every time, but they all continued to have some drawback(s), until I finally landed on this one.

Works OK. Bright and able to project big screen at very short distance, but fan noise is unbearable especially in Bright mode (I need to turn this on to use in a bright room). Also unable to get a straight line at the top edge of the screen. I'm returning mainly due to fan noise issue.

Time to replace the old projector a Sony VPLHS20. Was 19 years old and started to lose picture quality. Only had 1300 lumens to begin with. Had problems managing light conditions in the theater room downstairs during the middle of the day. Got the UHD55 after a lot of research and comparisons.

Relally like the idea of having the projector inches away from the screen and a 4K projector doing that was getting pretty expensive! But for a 1080p picture this exceeds my expectation! Definitely a value for money.

I upgraded to this from a 540p regular throw Epson projector, which I also loved and served me well for many years. I was leary to upgrade but not having cords running across my apartment living room cannot be beat.

I gave it three stars because the video quality is impressive, but not enough for me to keep it. The fan noise was unbearable. I tried lowering the brightness but I could still hear it over the volume.
