Nikon AF Zoom Nikkor 24-85mm f/2.8-4D IF tries to be everything a photographer might want to have in an all-purpose standard zoom lens. Unfortunately, it falls short a bit in some areas.
The Nikkor AF 24-85mm f/2.8-4 looks a bit dated on the D3x, both in terms of appearance and performance. The lens s capable of delivering excellent resolution in the image center when stopped down a little, but the borders and corners perform rather poor at large apertures.
The Nikkor AF 24-85mm f/2.8-4D IF is an very good standard zoom and it was the right decision by Nikon to discontinue its younger cousin (AF-S 24-85mm f/3.5-4.5G IF-ED) rather than this lens.
The lens worked just as I hoped it would. It gives me great results for sporting events in most gyms. It's a great all-around lens to have. Ideal when you have to quickly grab your camera for the shot you don't want to miss. I have it on my camera most of the time.
This lens is everything it has been claimed to be, including HEAVY! The HEAVY, I will deal with as ot also provides stability. I can't say enough great things about it, and really look forward to using it for the rest of my life.
I purchased the 24-85mm f/2.8-4D because I wanted a lens that provided the focal range of 24mm for landscape and 85mm for portraits. The macro feature interested me that I can photograph a subject up close for tabletop photography.
I got this lens because it's faster than most kit zooms, but not huge like the 24-70, it's compatible with my film body, and it has a decent 1:2 macro ability. It's capable of great shots, but it's pretty disappointing wide open.
Relatively fast, solid build, aperture ring, excellent Macro capability
Very soft wide open, no VR, quite hefty
This lens is surprisingly sharp through out the focal range once stopped down a stop. Reasonable build quality for a consumer grade zoom. No creeps. Almost perfect vacation lens due to size, focal range and image quality. This lens is my most used lens on D3s.
Good range for full framers. Usable at wide open. Gets sharp closed one stop. Useful macro mode.
Distortion at wide end. Soft when subject is back-lit (flare).
An amazing lens. Crisp and fast auto focus. This lens is heavy but that is because of the great build quality. This lens is always in my bag. Works great for portrait and landscape shots. The bokeh at f2.8 is mind blowing.
The lens is dirty in the internal glasses of the lens with dust. I will have to get it opened and cleaned by a professional. Not as good condition as advertised. I wanted first to return it, but because I have 30 days return policy, I will first get a quote from the cleaning.
Man this is a great lens. I had bought it used and had to return it for a squeaky AF motor but of the images that I took when checking it out - they were great. Color, saturation, sharpness - this guy has it all. It's build and IQ seem pro level. An often overlooked gem in the Nikon line up.
Nice glass and it is a good lens to use as a back-up or when travel. Not a work horse.
Amazing is the only this I have to say I would totally recommend this lens
