Optically, the lens holds its own, despite showing some signs of age: wide open it shows some corner softness, and chromatic aberration is a problem for Nikon bodies which don't automatically remove it.

The Nikkor AF-D 24mm f/2.8 shows good sharpness in the center wide open with rather soft borders. Stopped down to f/8 however the sharpness is on a very high level across the whole FX image. Unfortunately vignetting is on a rather high level, especially for larger apertures.

The Nikkor AF-D 24mm f/2.8 shows very good to excellent sharpness in the image center. The borders and corners are quite soft wide open and benefit only slightly from stopping down. Distortion moderate and vignetting no issue, except wide open.

The Nikkor AF 24mm f/2.8D didn't really convince during the tests due to various shortcomings. The resolution figures were generally very decent and there's only a slight degree of barrel distortions. However, the lens shows very high vignetting at f/2.8 and very pronounced CAs.

The Nikon 24mm f2.8 lens is the older design so you need a body which has an auto focus motor in the body, but it is light weight, and sharp. I looked at reviews of the new 20mm f1.8 lens as a good travel lens for landscapes and building interiors and decided I did not need the extra 4mm and speed...

Purchased this Nikon 24mm 2.8 for a combination of coverage, optical quality, and lower price than Nikon's superb but more expensive 24mm 1.4 wide angle, for night time street and indoor event coverage.

I bought this lens for architectural interiors with my Nikon D610. For such uses, it'll be fine. I can set the ISO high enough that even at f/5.6 or f/8, which is what I would likely use, the exposure would be fast enough for fairly easy hand-hold. So lack of VR won't matter.

Handy size, relatively inexpensive, sharp enough for most real-world usage

  • -

Not terribly sharp wide open; soft edges

For a wide angle, my options were the 20mm f/2.8, 28mm f/2.8, 35mm f/1.8 and 35mm f/2. I own the 50mm f/1.8 & 18-55mm af-s VR. My camera is DX format. My 50mm is too long of a focal length sometimes, and the 18-55mm is slow, sometimes horrible with color fringing or pictures would look muddy.

  • +

Picture quality, Fast, Slightly Wide on DX format, not too much distortion, but enough to play with, Warm colors

  • -

Fixed focal length, lens flare (not too bad, but definitely more flare than my other lenses)
