Was just out shooting the R1C1 today. The ability to control ratios across two zones is excellent. I have three flash units, do two on one zone, one on the other, and with diffusers, I can get extremely natural looking light with some dimensionality from having a 2:1 or 1.5:1 ratio between zones.
Easy to setup, light and extremely handy. Nevertheless, the two head system lacks power at the very small apertures often required for macro shots: the guide number of one SB-R200 head is 10 (m, ISO 100) and about 14 for two.
If you understand micro photography, you know how valuable lighting can be. This set-up is great for macro. I have three lights (purchased an extra one). The commander is a great bonus as it can be used to fire off camera Nikon flashes for portraits or any other situation that a off camera flash is...
This is an amazing product. I use it both for macro photography (or as Nikon says, Micro) and I use it as a lighting system for product shots, portraits, etc. The light from the flash heads is nice, very easy to get a nice soft light from.
It really is complete! Flowers are fun with the close-up lighting possibilities. Yet these little lights can become their own remote light sources off camera to highlight faces in a group portrait, or backlight product photography.
I use the Nikon R1C1 system for close up/macro work both indoors and out in the bright sun. I have had the system for about 6 mos. now and still being surprised at what it can do.
System is so flexible with the ability to place the flashes anywhere. Used for macro it is nice to have units of this size. I am able to hide them for back light on low to ground objects.
A really excellent kit. Initially rather daunting as there are a lot of components but once you get started it is fine. Works really well as both an on camera and off camera macro flash thanks to the IR commander unit. Also, because of the rapid cycle time, is ideal for photo stacking.
Flash worked fine after I purchased the batteries and g00gled the user' manual
A comprehensive kit and I'm getting into the multitude of variables therein. The SB-R200 battery cover(s) are both fiddly and quite irritating to replace/relocate. Will follow up on this issue.
