While its wide-open performance leaves a bit to be desired, it's hard not to commend this lens for its performance based solely on its price point. Stop it down to Æ’/2.8 and it provides excellent results; by Æ’/8, it's one of the sharpest lenses we've tested.

The Nikkor 1.8/50 isn’t a faultless instrument because it would be impossible for a 120 $ device to be so. For that sum of money we still get quite a lot so it would hard to complain especially that in the most important category, concerning the resolution, the Nikkor definitely shows its true...

  • +

very good price/quality ratio,, excellent image quality in the frame center,, good image quality at the frame edge,, chromatic aberration not bothersome,, negligible distortion,, silent and quite fast autofocus,, high transmission.

  • -

too low image quality near the maximum aperture,, distinct coma,, bothersome astigmatism near the maximum relative aperture,, significant vignetting,, autofocus could have been more accurate,, we expected better work against bright light in the case of such a simple construction.

The Nikkor is indeed a typical fast normal prime: small and light-weight, affordable and, yes, bitingly sharp, at least stopped down. Wide open, the lens lacks both contrast and sharpness, especially towards the borders and corners.

The Nikkor Ai-S 50mm f/1.8 performed basically identical to the current AF D model so it's your choice whether you prefer AF and a plastic construction or smooth manual focusing in a solid package.

The Nikkor AF 50mm f/1.8 D is a low profile lens with less sex-appeal than the big glass but it is an interesting lens nonetheless. At wide-open aperture it is a little soft at the image borders and the contrast level is a little on the low side.

So I am newer to the camera game but I have a Nikon D5200 body that came with the kit 18-55mm lens. This lens is ok but I knew I needed something a little better, so I went ahead and purchased this 50mm f1.8 Nikon lens. It has been working great for me.

Purchased this lens second hand in almost new condition. Amazingly sharp, good contrast, zero distortion - what else you need to be happy?!!! From indoor family shooting to landscapes - just as good as good can be. I use it on Nikon D800E and IQ this lens delivers just outstanding.

I still consider myself a beginner in Photography... I think that prime lenses are a great tool to teach yourself how to frame a picture if you are as bad as I was in the very beginning. This specific lens is simple and light and remains one of my favorite go to lens.

Nifty Fifty prime lens, no zoom, and very small size, very vey sharp. My camera (D7200) which has a Auto Focus Motor drives it very well. You must use a tripod or have a very steady hand when using this lens, I sometimes wish it had the Vibration Reduction feature, but it doesn't.

Make sure your camera has an AF motor built in (higher end Nikons, such as D7000, D7100, any FX camera) otherwise the lens will be completely manual. Also remember if you have a DX sensor, your lens won't be f/1.8 @ 50mm, but something like f/2.7 @ 75mm.

  • +

Very fast lens Bokeh is great Very inexpensive Works on FX and DX sensors Fast focus

  • -

No internal AF motor, so you need a camera that has a AF motor or be okay with manual focus Does not come with lens hood Focusing is loud

I have had this lens since about 1990. My camera got stolen our of my car, with a bunch of lenses and this was the first lens I replaced. It is truly my favorite of my collection. The optics are awesome, and the small size and light weight make it easy to carry the camera around all day.

Great lense for the price, it takes great shots but i am a little dissapointed that the AF feature does not synch with my camera. It is difficut to manually focus every time you move. This I do not like when trying to get children who move a lot.

The lens does not have an internal motor and so I had to focus manually. This resulted in more than 80% of shots being out of focus with an aperature setting of 4 or bigger. When I get the focus right however, the photos are stunning.

I had a D80 with 18-135 and 70-300 VR. I bought this lens to use mostly in museums where flash is not allowed also to use it with Nikon CLS system with my SD600 flash. I also own older lenses and Nikon bodies. I used 50 f/2 AI and 50 f/1.4 AI on my D80 before.

  • +

This is a very sharp lens even at f/1.8. At f/1.8 the DOF is very shallow so nailing the focus is very important. In my opinion some of the complaints of softness come from the unfocused results. It is hard to focus in dim places and at night inside homes.

  • -

It is very weakly built. It gives a lot of resistance when screwing the lens compared to smooth operation of 18-135 or 70-300VR.
