The Nikkor AF-D 28mm f/2.8 shows very good to excellent sharpness in the image center and good borders throughout the tested aperture range. The corners are soft wide open but increase to good values at medium apertures. Distortion moderate and vignetting no issue, except wide open.

The Nikkor AF-D 28mm f/2.8 shows very good to excellent sharpness in the image center. The image borders and corners are very soft wide open, though, and stay quite a bit behind the image center, even stopped down. In addition, vignetting is on a rather high level at large apertures.

The principal design of the Nikkor AF 28mm f/2.8D is obviously closely related to the AF 24mm f/2.8D so it shares some of its characteristics. The resolution figures are very good but otherwise the lens left something to be desired for a fix-focal.

One of Nikons finest AI-s lenses. The center sharpness is fantastic at every aperture and the corners are tack sharp from F/5.6 on. I use this lens almost exclusively now for landscape photography on my D800e.

Great lens works amazing love the sharpness and the amazing ability to shoot you in low light and be a general purpose lens for your everyday shooting needs only wish it was a silent motor when shooting but very sharp focused and end to end sharpness was worth the money for the lens thanks again...

When I purchased this lens, I had mixed expectations. I wanted a standard 28mm wide angle to keep in my camera bag, but didn't feel like I'd use one enough to justify the price tag on the 1.8G.I haven't been disappointed with this lens in respect to the insignificant amount of money I spent on it.

Has great depth of field and is fast. Focuser works smoothly. Great for landscapes and astronomy. The lens is much better than the poor reviews indicate. It is sharp if you use it properly. Colors are well saturated.

It has no vibration reduction and on a DX camera will require manual focus. But it will work. It requires more skill to use it than your newer lens that has vibration reduction. There is less room for operator error. The focus is critical. And shutter speed must be fast enough to avoid camera shake.

This lens is a bit of a sleeper as its quite cheap but does give quite good image quality once past F4. I recently decided to go with primes for all lenses under 100 mm - why carry around a 24-70 that weighs 1.4 kilos when I can get a 50mm, a 28 and a 20 that weigh just about 0.6 kilos between them...

small, light, very sharp centre resolution

-
some distortion, not particularly robust

I was hoping that this lens would be the perfect, slightly wide "normal" lens for my D200. I was not thrilled with the image quality - it seemed to focus properly and sharply at very close distances, but was not sharp at normal distances. The problems could have been due to the sample I had.

Compact, fairly fast, not terribly expensive.

My sample did not focus properly (exhibited back focus) on my D200.

Works great on my D90. The old Nikkor is still better than some newer 3rd party lenses. Package was secure.

Sharp lens but the falloff on anything from f8 to wide open kind of kills this lens' usefulness. Thinking of returning it for the pricier model.

This lens produces sharp images with good color and contrast.
