I needed something wider on my dx camera. I had many 50, 58, then even 85 and 105 mm lenses, but nothing wide. On DX 28mm becomes 42, so is not wide. I have the tamron 28-75 / 2.8, and not only is not wide enough at 28, but it doesn't have a good reputation at its wide end.
Build quality, sharpness stopped down, great focal length, even on DX, smooth focus
f/2.8 is NOT usable

This lens is extremely sharp at f4 f5.6. I absolutely love this prime lens; it's mounted more than my nifty-fifty. It is an awesome addition to anybody who loves prime lenses.
This lens is superb compared to the Tamron 17-50mm f/2.8 on my Nikon D90. Superb contrast, sharp and colours come out better and most importantly, no distortion. A hood is needed to prevent flaring. Metal hoods come cheap on eBay.
Bought to use on Nikon F5 and D700. Sharp and focusing quick. Does tend to flare when pointed into bright points of light, buy a HN-1 hood to reduce this. Excellent at f/2.8, bokeh very creamy and can make for good portraits.
I have always liked the 24mm prime, having had one since the early days of the 70s and Nikon F series. Interestingly the lens has not changed much optically since then, and a side by side comparison with this one and my dear old NC Ai-S from 1973 confirms little difference.
Manual only. didn't work on photo safari of Aurora Borealis.
Fantastic manual lens for landscapes. I also use it for infrared with no hot spot.
Good per expected, Lens is sharp. Clean.
