The D5300 is a very good entry-level DSLR – which in our view are sub $849 kits – and earns our Recommended status. Stills and videos are top notch and the built-in Wi-Fi and GPS are real pluses, and that vari-angle LCD takes it to the next level.
-
+
Very good 24MP stills, Superior 1080/60p videos, Built-in Wi-Fi, GPS, Vari-angle lens
-
-
Weak 18-55mm kit lens, Noisy at ISOs higher than 1,600, Not the sturdy build of an enthusiast DSLR
![]() |
The Nikon D5300 follows the Nikon D5200 and there is an important difference between the two. The D5300 has a new image sensor without a low-pass filter, which contributed to an excellent performance in our resolution tests.
![]() |
The D5300 is a very good upper-entry-level DSLR with a high-resolution sensor and solid video features. It's bigger than mirrorless competitors and it's priced on the high end of its class, but it won't let down a budding photographer, especially those who plan to upgrade from the kit lens to...
-
+
Excellent image quality, High resolution sensor produces highly detailed images, Useful and sophisticated Auto ISO system, Solid feature set for first-time DSLR users, Good frame coverage of 39-point AF array, 1080/60p HD maximum video resolution, Customizable Fn button, Fully articulated LCD,...
-
-
Single Fn button is only means of direct access to key shooting settings like ISO and WB, Extreme lag in magnified live view, On-screen 'info' menu is dense and hard to operate quickly, No live preview of aperture changes in live view, Built-in flash lacks master function, Slow live view AF
![]() |
The Nikon D5300 DSLR camera offers a very nice mixture of automatic and manual control shooting features, making this model a good first interchangeable lens camera. It offers fast image processing speeds when working in Viewfinder mode, and the camera's image quality is very good.
-
+
Very good image quality versus other entry-level DSLRs, Improved performance speed versus predecessor, Anti-aliasing filter removed for clearer images, ISO settings up to 25,800 (equivalent), Noise in photos is limited, even at mid- to high-range ISO settings, Built-in Wi-Fi and GPS included, Stereo...

No touchscreen feature with LCD, Battery drains quickly when using Live View mode, Camera's performance slows considerably in Live View mode, Autofocus sharpness is inconsistent when recording video, No eye sensor; viewfinder mode doesn't activate automatically when you raise D5300 to your eye,...

The Nikon D5300 is a great choice as a general-purpose dSLR.
-
+
Excellent photo quality, a great feature set, and speedy performance put the Nikon D5300 ahead of the pack.
-
-
The default settings could be better and Live View is still really slow to use.
![]() |
The D5300 offers a few performance improvements over the D5200. It also adds some compelling features that competing products like the Canon T5i don't have, such as 1080p/60 fps video capture and built-in GPS and Wi-Fi.
-
+
Easy to handle and use, Captured images have plenty of detail and accurate color, Built-in GPS, High ISO capability
-
-
18-140mm kit lens is rather large and loses fine detail, Some controls are oddly placed, Noise reduction can be overly aggressive

$1,000 gets you a lot of different options for digital cameras--here's why the D5300 should be on your list.

After what has been said it is almost needless to point out how the Nikon D5300 is a great camera advisable from every point of view. It produces excellent pictures, precise, with many details, and so extensive in pixels to allow even very large prints.
-
+
Photos and videos of high quality and precision, Integrated Wi-Fi, Many features, Easy to use.
-
-
The screen is not touch, The mobile app allows minimal interaction with the camera.
![]() |
Despite being an evolutionary upgrade to the D5200, the Nikon D5300 sports a newly developed 24.2MP sensor without an AA filter for enhanced sharpness, and Nikon's latest EXPEED 4 processor for better high ISO handling and 1080/60p HD video.
-

Excellent image quality similar to more expensive DSLRs (like the D7100); Great dynamic range; Responsive all-around performer; Excellent Full HD video-shooting quality; Built-in Wi-Fi with remote control and sharing features; Built-in GPS; Compact and lightweight size; 18-140mm kit lens performs...

AA-filterless sensor makes it more prone to moire; Burst speed slows with highest quality 14-bit RAW images; Live View mode not as good as some competitors; No external headphone jack; GPS receiver not very sensitive.

The Nikon D5300 is a fantastic camera. It's small, light, competent and can make breathtaking images in any light. Colors are fantastic, and it focuses and works well in dim light with crazy ISOs unheard of just a few years ago.
I owned a D5100 before I bought this camera. I'm a commercial professional photographer; but I also teach photography at a local art center. My students were intimidated by my pro level cameras, so I thought I would purchase an entry level camera with a kit lens and see what they were seeing.
After careful consideration I elected to go for the D5300 for several reasons - the newer 24MP sensor without the optical low-pass filter, the newer Exspeed 4 software, the flip-out screen, decent ISO at the upper end, HD video at 60fps, WIFI connection...
I was going to get the Nikon D3400 but decided on the D5300 as it has built in wifi for picture transfers and a GPS chip for geo-tagging your pictures. The GPS works great outside but don't expect it to work inside like your other devices do. I am very pleased with this camera and all it's features.
-
+
The only Nikon DSLR with built in wifi and GPS
-
-
Expensive little buggers, but I knew this going in.
I have been using this for a week and I must say that I am very impressed with this camera! The automatic Geotagging and WiFi sharing works well and is very convenient. The camera takes awesome images in any condition.

Great Image Quality, Awesome Color Accuracy, Has Integrated WiFi and GPS, Great Low Light Performance, Large Lens Selection to Choose From
-

The iOS Nikon App is a bit confusing, Factory Settings Aren't Great, A bit of lag when taking Low Light RAW images
Really easy to use. Make sure you have a descent size memory card to prevent filling up too quick. 32GB at least

+
Easy to set up and start snapping pictures

None so far
It's a bunch of good stuff to play with, but somethings have to be clarified, camera body made in Taiwan, not Japan. Tripod head handle is made of a very low quality plastic, in my case the european power adapter didn't fit on the american charger. All the rest so far so good.
This is my first DSLR and it is extremely easy to use. I thoroughly enjoy using this camera in regards to taking pictures of my newborn son as well as my daughters. The video aspect is tremendous and I cannot wait to use this during the soccer season for my 3 and 5 year old daughters.

Easy To Use, Fast / Accurate Auto-Focus, Fast Shutter Speed, Good Image Quality, Good Image Stabilization, High ISO Performance, Large Clear LCD, Quiet, Tilt /Swivel LCD

This is nice compact camera with a lot of features that are easy to use. Anyone can take great pictures and look like pro, just use auto mode. I like swivel screen that let you take pictures from different angles. The only drawback is that Nikon should include lens hood with the kit.
Love the camera, my first DSLR. Thought about the Canon T5i or the T6i (still not out yet for some reason) but this camera is far and away better.
