Making a super wide angle lens is not an easy task and lens manufacturers often have to accept one or another trade off in order to bring to market a product that would be reasonably priced and still deliver acceptable performance.

The Nikkor AF 14mm f/2.8D ED is a good ultra-wide angle lens but it is not a killer offer - especially so regarding its very high price tag. Technically the resolution figures are superb in the center and Okayish (f/2.8) to (just) very good (f/8) at the borders.

This lens is the finest tool for shooting interior architecture. It will easily capture an entire guest room of a hotel without distortion. It is a work horse and I value it highly.

The Nikkor 14mm f/2.8D ED was my first plunder into the world of high-end professional Nikkor lens, and it didn't disappoint in the slightest! I have always been an advocate for purchasing previous generation versions of popular Nikkor lens like the older 28-70mm f/2.8D ED, 80-200mm f/2.8D ED and so...

This lens may be a soft out on the corners at full aperture for sharpness but it more than makes up for it with central and foreground sharpness which astounds me no end, and it is only when pixilation become an issue with my D700 camera sensor image quality becomes an issue.

  • +

Central to foreground sharpness and zero window glare problems.

  • -

can't protect it with a filter and some moustache distortion.

So I purchased this lens for a lot of my hotel photography shot before I bought the 14-24mm zoom version of this lens. To be perfectly honest, I dont notice much of a difference in sharpness and image quality between the 14-24mm and this 14mm prime.

  • +

Sharp, Ultra Wide (on FF), Fast Motor, Drop in rear filters.

  • -

a bit soft at wide open.

This is one fantastic wide angle. Superb edge to edge sharpness, great contrast, great flare control. I considered buying the Nikkor 15 3.5 but I felt the capabilities of my F5 are better exploited with the 14 2.8.

  • +

Linear image, special effects possible by tilting and manipulating the lens, sharpness, contrast, build quality, flare control.

  • -

No hard case included,no hard cap included either. Would have liked bayonet filters as opposed to gel.

most extreme wide angle lens with FX format camera. However you will get very poor performance in low light out of this lens.
