When you want to go ultra ultra wide with nikkor, 2 lenses comes to mind. 14mm and 14-24mm. With similar prices, not an easy choice. As always when it comes to lenses, everyone has its pro and cons.
-
+
It's lighter and smaller than the 14-24
-
-
Less sharp than 14-24
A system in which only the rear lens group moves during focusing, thus eliminating changes in the physical length of the lens during focusing and enabling faster focusing. Such lenses are designated with RF on the lens barrel.
Making a super wide angle lens is not an easy task and lens manufacturers often have to accept one or another trade off in order to bring to market a product that would be reasonably priced and still deliver acceptable performance.
Overall, this is a really nice lens that handles well and offers excellent image quality.

High sharpness, good retro-compatibility

No AF/MF mode
If the world of ultra-wide is your liking, this lens is my go-to recommendation due to its managable size and weight. I previously owned the 15mm F/5.6 and 15mm F/3.5 manual focus predecessors to this lens.
Nikon 14mm is very amzing lens Prime wide-angle perspective and fast f/1.8 aperture delivers great low-light performance.Quiet focusing with built-in Silent Wave Motor (SWM). gps monitoring system Rear Focus (RF) provides smooth and fast autofocus while eliminating front barrel rotation and lens...
At first, you are stuck by the size and shape of the front lens element. The look of this lens speaks to the precision of this 14mm lens. The 14mm f/2.8 doesnt disappoint. It creates razor sharp images. This lens comes with a huge wow factor.
This is one fantastic wide angle. Superb edge to edge sharpness, great contrast, great flare control. I considered buying the Nikkor 15 3.5 but I felt the capabilities of my F5 are better exploited with the 14 2.8.

+
Linear image, special effects possible by tilting and manipulating the lens, sharpness, contrast, build quality, flare control.

No hard case included,no hard cap included either. Would have liked bayonet filters as opposed to gel.
I purchased my first 14mm with my F5 back in 2001. Loved this lens. Like most professional photographers we try to invest in the best glass. I've gone through a series of camera bodies; D1, D1H, D200, D800, D810. Enjoyed them all. I noticed with D800/D810 the 14mm was not as tack sharp.
This lens may be a soft out on the corners at full aperture for sharpness but it more than makes up for it with central and foreground sharpness which astounds me no end, and it is only when pixilation become an issue with my D700 camera sensor image quality becomes an issue.
-
+
Central to foreground sharpness and zero window glare problems.
-
-
can't protect it with a filter and some moustache distortion.
This is one beautifully crafted lens and so solidly put together with none of that plastic fantastic stuff that have on more modern designs, which worries me. It is not particularly sharp out the corners at f2.8 with fairly significant vignetting, but that does not concern me one little bit because...
EXPENSIVE BUT WORTH IT. THE BEST ULTRA WIDE ANGLE LENS AVAILABLE. I WISH IT DID NOT TAKE GEL FILTERS AS I FIND THEM HAD TO HANDLE WITH OUT SCRATCHING. IF YOU AGREE PLEASE WRITE OR E MAIL NIKON YOUR VIEWS.

SHARP, CONTRASTY, LOW FLAIR COMPAIRED TO SIGMA AND TAMRON.

REAR GEL FILTERS, THIS LENS SHOULD HAS HAS BAYONET FILTERS SIMILAR TO THE NIKON 16MM 2.8D LENS. NIKON STATED TO ME IN AN E-MAIL THAT PHOTOGRAPHERS PERFERRED GEL FILTERS DUE TO THE VARIETY AVAILABLE.
