The Nikon AF-S VR Micro-Nikkor 105mm f/2.8G IF-ED captures sharp images and is capable of true 1:1 macro magnification, making it a clear Editors' Choice.

Very sharp. 1:1 macro magnification. No distortion. Optically stabilized. Compact.
-
-
Pricey. Short working distance for 1:1 photography.
Thanks to the addition of Vibration Reduction (VR) technology this is a big lens by conventional 100mm macro standards, and it is also heavier and more expensive than the norm.
-
+
Packed full of features
-
-
Dubious use of VR technology
There is not a lot I can criticise about this lens considering the optical performance along side the build quality and features. I think it will find a lot of friends amongst both professionals and keen amateurs alike.
-
+
The only true macro with stabilisation. And it works, Truly superb optical quality, Rapid and silent autofocus

The price, Drop-off in resolution at the edges when wide open. (Minor)
One of the most useful and praised lenses in Nikon history, the 105mm f/2.8 manual focus Micro-Nikkor of 1984 sired a line of high-speed close-up/portrait lenses, each growing in capability, size, and weight-up to this new 105mm f/2.8 ($830, street).
Since its introduction, this lens has garnered a strong reputation for the quality it is capable of delivering, with good reason. Sharpness is excellent in the centre at maximum aperture, and outstanding across the frame when stopped down.

Excellent sharpness in the centre from maximum aperture, Outstanding sharpness when stopped down, Good build quality, Effective VR system, Low CA and distortion

Effectiveness of the VR system diminishes at close distances
Nikon caters particularly well for macro photographers, with 40mm, 60mm, 85mm and 200mm options in addition to this 105mm lens. An update to the popular Nikkor 105mm f/2.8D AF Micro optic, the Nikon AF-S VR Micro-Nikkor 105mm f/2.8G IF-ED adds a host of improvements, chief of which being Nikon's...
This Micro lens from Nikon, was the first of it's kind to include vibration reduction when it was introduced. It sports a fast f/2.8 maximum aperture, a silent wave focusing motor, which allows full time manual focus override and Nikon's Nano Crystal anti-reflective lens coatings.
With a decent range of features on top of good optics and VR, the Nikkor is worth every penny
What can be written in the summary? Nikkor 2.8/105 VR is undoubtedly a very fine instrument, which will enable us taking very sharp photos. The problem (problem for Nikon, not to its customers) is that there is a great competition in the class of macro lenses of focal length 100 mm.

+
solid casing and good build quality, excellent image quality, both in the centre and in the corner of the frame, exquisite chromatic aberration, small distortion, not too big astigmatism, great work of autofocus, effective stabilization

some problems at work against bright light, prohibitive price
I bought this lens specially for macro as I wanted to buy directly the best lens from Nikon for macro. The lens focusing is really sharp, the details on a Nikon D5 is really good (it is a prime lens).I tried it and i am very happy with this.Becareful, it might depends on your combination but i had...
Hands down, the best macro lens I've used. Now that I have a full-frame DSLR (Nikon D750), I love taking advantage of that sensor. this lens allows me to do just that.
This 105 mm micro lens is a nice tool for close up, critical focusing and creative photography.??

The last macro lens I owned fit my Pentax K1000 manual (film) work horse body and it was not fixed length and had almost no image distortion at edges. It was a great all purpose lens that also happened to be a macro. Compared to today's prices it also cost almost nothing.

Easy To Use

Fixed Focal Length
This lens is perfect. I have taken the best close-up pics I have ever taken using it. Super quiet auto-focus, great vibration control, and overall the best macro lens I have ever seen. A must buy for anyone into macro photography

Consistent Output, Durable, Easily Interchangeable, Fast / accurate auto-focus, Nice Bokeh, Strong Construction

Heavy
It seems to be constructed from a different design than any other lens I have owned. Though a straight 2.8. The F stop will tighten to some degree as you get closer to your subject. One image of a bee, the leg was in focus yet the rest is blurred.

Pricey but worth it
I ordered this expecting the auto VR lens, however after it arrived, it was a MANUAL FOCUS lens. Very disappointed. It is a quality lens, but with modern DSLR's, it doesn't register for any of the information that comes with normal AF lenses.
After reading every professional review and consumer comment on this lens all I can say is: You get what you pay for. In this case, you get one great piece of glass that totally out performs everything else. [...]

Sharp Focus, Strong Construction

Slow Focus
Very sharp lens and beautiful photos on an Epson D300. It is heavy and a bit cumbersome, but all is forgiven when the photos show up on the computer screen or in prints. Ideal macro lens -- right focal length (at least for my tastes.

Automatic focus sometimes hard to achieve. Generally use manual most of the time. VR doesn't work reliable at close distances. For photos this close one should be using a tripod anyone so no big deal.
