The Nikon AF-S VR Micro-Nikkor 105mm f/2.8G IF-ED captures sharp images and is capable of true 1:1 macro magnification, making it a clear Editors' Choice.

  • +

Very sharp. 1:1 macro magnification. No distortion. Optically stabilized. Compact.

  • -

Pricey. Short working distance for 1:1 photography.

Thanks to the addition of Vibration Reduction (VR) technology this is a big lens by conventional 100mm macro standards, and it is also heavier and more expensive than the norm.

  • +

    Packed full of features

  • -

    Dubious use of VR technology

There is not a lot I can criticise about this lens considering the optical performance along side the build quality and features. I think it will find a lot of friends amongst both professionals and keen amateurs alike.

  • +

The only true macro with stabilisation. And it works, Truly superb optical quality, Rapid and silent autofocus

  • -

The price, Drop-off in resolution at the edges when wide open. (Minor)

Really an amazing lens. Heavy but well worth it. A transition coming from zoom lenses these last 10 plus years. Used to use prime lenses with film, but got away from it with digital - now nice to go back to prime lenses with a full from camera. Had forgotten what I had given up.

  • +

Very sharp, great colors. Great middle range lens.

  • -

maybe the weight, but you get used to it quickly - at least it feels like you are holding something. Getting accustomed to it right now, but does tend to search something on focus. Can't really fins anything that make me regret the purchase - not a "cons" but rather a "Pros".

A great lens if you want to do some creative shots close up (plants, insects, animals, food, jewellery etc). Also good for portraits where you might want a very shallow depth of field or a close up of an eyelash or a baby's foot etc.

  • +

Exactly what was ordered, in perfect condition and brand new

This is a fantastic little mini short-range telescope, basically. Others complain of focus "breathing" which makes them have to recompose the shot. Seems moving the tripod slightly isn't that big of a deal. That's what composing my shot is a lot of doing anyway.

  • +

Fast / accurate auto-focus, Nice Bokeh, Strong Construction

  • -

    Focus "breathing"

Since I returned to photography after a few decades doing other things, I enjoy photographing the smaller things in nature. This lens is absolutely outstanding for macro photography.

Very sharp lens and beautiful photos on an Epson D300. It is heavy and a bit cumbersome, but all is forgiven when the photos show up on the computer screen or in prints. Ideal macro lens -- right focal length (at least for my tastes.

  • -

Automatic focus sometimes hard to achieve. Generally use manual most of the time. VR doesn't work reliable at close distances. For photos this close one should be using a tripod anyone so no big deal.
