The Nikon AF-S Nikkor 50mm f/1.4G is a fast-aperture standard-angle lens for Nikon D-SLRs. It's tack sharp, even at f/1.4, and earns our Editors' Choice award.

  • +

Extremely sharp. Fast aperture. Reasonable price tag.

  • -

No aperture control ring. No vibration reduction.

This is an in-depth review of one of my favorite prime lenses – the Nikon 50mm f/1.4G, which was announced back in September of 2008. For many years the focal length of 50mm lenses was considered a “standard” or “normal” focal length, because it closely resembles the perspective of the human eye.

As our AF-S Nikkor 50mm f/1.4 G review discovers, this flagship prime lens from Nikon delivers excellent results in a small and lightweight package.

  • +

    Quick and quiet AF

  • -

    Poor retro compatibility

The AF-S Nikkor 50mm F1.4G was, at its introduction, hailed by Nikon as 'redefining the standard lens concept'. It turns out that in many ways that was no idle boast - in almost all respects the lens is clearly improved over its predecessor, the AF-Nikkor 50mm F1.4D .

  • +

Extremely even image quality across the frame, even on FX, Improved image quality over 50mm F1.4D at large apertures, Exceptional image quality when stopped down, Essentially no lateral chromatic aberration, Near-silent AF-S focus with full-time manual override

  • -

Slightly soft at large apertures, Somewhat susceptible to flare, Longitudinal (bokeh) chromatic aberration, most visible at large apertures, Vignetting at large apertures on full frame (essentially disappears by F2.8), Slower autofocus than the screw-drive AF-Nikkor 50mm F1.4D

Nikon AF-S Nikkor 50mm f/1.4G is the latest update to the venerable Nikkor 50mm f/1.4D. The Nikon communality has been expecting this lens for quite some time now, considering that the previous version of the lens was introduced in 1995 and has not seen any updates since then.

Nikon's latest take on the classic "fast fifty" knocks it out of the park.

Nikon's 50mm lens line up has now received the AF-S treatment. Here Gary Wolstenholme puts this optic to the test.

  • +

Excellent optical quality, Good build quality, Light weight, Good value

  • -

Focusing speed lower than previous version, 58mm filter size not common for Nikon prime lenses.

The newest version of Nikon's storied 50mm f/1.4 boasts a redesigned optical formula for more effective flare prevention. A 75mm equivalent on Nikon smaller-sensor DX bodies, this $500 (street) full-framer also has a circular-bladed aperture for smoother defocusing. HANDS ON

Overall, I think that the new 50mm f/1.4 AF-S is a great little lens, and I'm glad to see that the old AF-D model has finally been replaced. There's a lot to like about the new and improved lens – better image quality all around and lots of small improvements in the overall design.

The Nikon 50mm Æ’/1.4G AF-S tested well in our labs, marred only by soft results with significant corner shading when set to its widest aperture. Set to Æ’/2 it makes a nice portrait lens - sharp center, soft corners - and by Æ’/2.8 it's a decently sharp lens across the image.

After eight years and over a hundred thousand images, the 50mm 1.4 is still the lens I reach for most often, and (along with my 20mm 1.8 and 85mm 1.8) one of the three lenses I just can't imagine living without.

This lens spends much of its time on my D810. The lens is incredibly sharp, very well built and sucks in light like a black hole. Very satisfied.

This len takes very sharp pictures from f/2.8 to f/8 . Photos taken with this len has a very natural look and colors. Great upgrade from my older 50mm f/1.4D.

  • +

Very sharp, light and quiet. Pictures has a very natural look and colors. Sells at a bargain price.

Great lens. If your just starting out as a photographer like myself, the bokeh is awesome with this. I used it on a D60, the bokeh was O.K., just turn it to landscape to get the f/1.4 and it was very good then...I put it onto my D3100 & it was the BEST! Right on auto it was f/1.4.

    Bokeh, Macro, Portraits

  • -

    Pricey

The lens is ok, but I had bigger expectations for it. The AF doesn't work very well. It is also not very clear, at least in compare with the 35mm 1.8 I previously have.Overall, it is a good lens, but for the price ([$]), I would recommend 35mm 1.8.

  • +

    Strong Construction, Nice Bokeh, Durable

  • -

    Blurry Focus

Love this lens for generel photography and as a short portrait lens. AF is precise could be faster. Sharpness is great over the whole frame stopped down a bit and in the center it's quite good wide open too.

  • +

    sharpness, build quality, AF precision

  • -

AF a little slower than the old version

This lens allowed me to take the most beautiful photos with a perfectly blurred background. My customer was wowed and stunned by how amazing her photos looked. It completely opened the image up and made it look clear and crisp.
