The AF-S Nikkor 24mm f/1.4G ED is a fast wide-angle lens for Nikon SLRs, but it's expensive.

  • +

Wide f/1.4 maximum aperture. Captures crisp images. 9.8-inch close focus. Full-frame coverage.

  • -

Dim corners at wide aperture. Edge softness at f/1.4. Shows some barrel distortion. Not stabilized. Pricey.

Like the Nikon HG 10x42, which fared very well in our big test of the 10x42 class, the 8x42 model impressed us as well. First of all its perfectly corrected, flat field of view, sharp to the very edge, caught our attention; what’s more, its distortion is low, the coma – moderate and the brightness...

  • +

very solid casing,, good transmission,, perfectly sharp image across the whole field of view,, low chromatic aberration in the centre of the field of view,, very low astigmatism,, quite well corrected coma,, low brightness loss on the edge of the field,, low distortion,, very good whiteness...

  • -

a bit too high chromatic aberration on the edge of the field of view.

Nikon's latest wide angle prime sports a bright maximum aperture of f/1.4, silent focusing and Nano-Crystal coatings.

  • +

Excellent optical quality, Fast focusing, Superb build quality

  • -

Occasionally struggles to focus accurately enough for use at f/1.4, Slight barrel distortion, Pricey

At $2,200, the expectations for this lens have to be high. The 24mm Æ’/1.4G almost reaches them. Certainly, stopped down, the lens produces exceptional results, but as the main feature of the lens is its extremely wide aperture - Æ’/1.4 - we imagine the lens will spend much of its time here,...

Nikon’s first 24mm f/1.4 lens ever is also its first AF-S wide-angle prime, incorporating the familiar AF-S package: a Silent Wave Motor, instant start/stop autofocus action, and the M/A focusing mode that lets you fine-tune focus manually while in autofocus mode.

The image quality is absolutely excellent and fully in keeping with the lens's professional-grade build and high asking price.

The Nikkor AF-S 24 f/1.4 is a nice ultra-fast wide-angle lens. At large apertures it produces very sharp images in the image center with somewhat soft corners wide open. The lens needs to be stopped down to achieve very good sharpness across the frame. CAs are a bit pronounced wide open.

The Nikkor AF-S 24 f/1.4 is an impressive lens. At large apertures it produces very sharp images in the image center with somewhat soft corners wide open and stopped down it's sharp enough even for landscape work, although it's certainly not meant to be the primary choice for this kind of...

Once again we are dealing with a fast prime lens, manufactured by a reputable company, costing a lot of money, which, despite many unquestionable advantages, has several painful slip-ups as well.

  • +

high build quality,, very good resolution in the frame centre,, good resolution on the edge of the APS-C sensor,, chromatic aberration controlled well,, moderate distortion,, slight vignetting on the DX sensor,, well-corrected astigmatism,, fast, silent and accurate autofocus.

  • -

significant spherical aberration and focus-shift, connected to it,, high coma,, average work against bright light,, too high vignetting on full frame.

A wide angle lens with a bright maximum aperture of f/1.4 should be of interest to those who like shooting by available light as the brightness fades, or indoors.

I was sent to the Arctic Circle to research a glacier. At the time, D4s was my camera. With this lens, I was able to take pictures in the dark, under moonlight in -60 below zero, hand held. (The D5 was not on the market).

I'm very pleased with this lens as I sold my 35mm 1.4 to buy it. Sharp across the frame. Great bokeh and colors. Highly recommended.

Fell in love at first with this lens because I love wide angles, but such "love" meant not seeing the issues it has that eventually lead me to avoid using it. First, the lens is a nightmare to focus. I thought at first it was my technique, or my uncalibrated cameras.

  • +

Excellent rendition stopped down. Beautiful bokeh.

  • -

Focus shift makes it a nightmare to focus. Really not sharp enough before f2.

By far one of my best primes in my collection. I'm very happy with her.

Good lens for low light and subject isolation with fascinating Bokeh. Works best with accessory flash based focus assist, achieving more precise focus in very subdued lighting. This lens makes some special pictures otherwise unobtainable with the other 24mm optics.
