The Nikon AF-S Nikkor 24-70mm f/2.8G ED is the lens for Nikon event shooters, but its not a perfect performer.
-
+
Great center sharpness throughout zoom range. Constant f/2.8 aperture.
-
-
Edge performance suffers. Some distortion. Lacks optical stabilization. Pricey.

This is an in-depth review of the Nikon 24-70mm f/2.8G ED lens that was released back in August of 2007 together with the 14-24mm f/2.8G ED lens. I have owned a number of different copies of the Nikon 24-70mm for many years, pretty much from the day the lens was announced and I have probably spent...

You people know who you are. This is Nikon's best mid-range zoom ever for Nikon 35mm and FX format digital cameras, which makes sense since its also the newest and most expensive. It just works, and it works great, if you don't mind carrying its weight.
-
+
Perfect for use as your only lens.
-
-
Don't use this on DX ; get the DX 17-55mm f/2.8 instead. Don't bother with this if you also carry wide or tele zooms; you don't need it. See Nikon FX Lenses for more.

What Digital Camera review the Nikon AF-S Nikkor 24-70mm f.2.8G ED full frame Nikon lens...
-
+
Blisteringly quick and precise AF. MTF is consistently high.
-
-
Lens shadow cast by pop-up flashgun at wide-angle settings.

Surprisingly, this $1,700 (street) lens is Nikon's first constant-aperture optic in the very popular, all-purpose, standard zoom category. Both of the company's previous pro and amateur 24-85mm lenses had variable apertures.

Although not very exotic, the standard zoom covers a range most photographers couldn't do without. The Nikon 24-70mm performs as you would expect from a lens of this calibre and price.
-
+
Excellent central resolution throughout the focal length range, Great contrast, Superb resistance to flare and ghosting
-
-
Corner quality could be better, Rough zoom mechanism on this sample, Size – it is a long lens

There's not much to say here that the rest of this review hasn't already indicated. Performance on a subframe sensor is exquisite, given that the lens isn't really put to the test. On the full-frame camera, it's sharp pretty much at all focal lengths and apertures in the center.

The Nikkor AF-S 24-70 is an impressive standard zooms lens that delivers very sharp and contrasty images. With its fast aperture it allows for low light shooting or alternatively object separation with limited depth of field, where it delivers an unusually smooth bokeh for a zoom lens in this focal...

It will be one of shorter summaries. Nikon undoubtedly offered a splendid instrument to the professionals. If you want to be nasty, though, you might add that the Zeiss gave a better one to the Sony system and Sigma didn’t lag behind with its new 24–70 mm f/2.8 model either – it can put the Nikkor...

great quality of casing,, outstanding image quality in the frame centre at all combinations of focal lengths and apertures,, good image quality on the edge of the frame from f/4.0 upwards,, chromatic aberration quite well corrected,, moderate distortion,, low astigmatism,, practical lack of...
-
-
image quality on the edge of the frame at the maximum aperture should have been better,, transmission worse than that of competitors,, huge coma in the full frame corners,, average work against bright light for this class of equipment.

Nikon's latest wide aperture standard zoom costs £1219 and sports features such as Internal Focusing and Nano-Crystal coatings.

I do not usually write product reviews but I love this lens so much that I felt that I had to say something. I like to shoot with prime lenses and was using Nikon 50mm and 85mm, 1.4 lenses. I wanted a zoom lens that was more utilitarian so I purchased the AF-S Nikkor 24-70mm f/2.8 lend without VR.

amazing images... super sharp, fast focus and use in all kind of photography.. if you use DX format..never mind...to much money for crop sensor. FX user. best midrange zoom ever.needless to say, The only downside is the weight..

This has been one of the lenses I have been saving for to add to my collection. I purchased the 70-200mm f/2.8 VRII last year, but still needed that "fast" lens in the lower end of the zoom range for use with my D7100 (which I plan to upgrade to full frame once I save some more).
-
+
Amazing images, fast, low edge distortion at f/2.8 and none when stopping down, solid, well-built, great in low light situations, beautiful bokeh
-
-
It is heavy, but "heavy" means there are more quality glass elements to this lens which results in overall better photographs.
![]() |
The best lens i have (with the 70-200) tack sharp from 24 to 70... The only drawback is the weight.. for me is a 98% on my camera even at night

This is one of the Nikon "holy trinity" lenses to have. Really great as a walk about lens, although the field of view will be somewhat limited on a DX camera body due to the crop factor.
-
+
Consistent Output, Durable, Easily Interchangeable, Fast / accurate auto-focus, Rugged, Strong Construction

I have purchased two of these for use in the studio and for outside portraits. we shoot alot of pictures- mainly seniors - and they have performed up to expectatins.

Consistent Output, Durable, Fast / accurate auto-focus, Nice Bokeh, Strong Construction

Heavy

Best standard zoom you can buy for a Nikon. AF is very snappy, build is amazing, contrasty lens, and images are very sharp wide open. By far the best lens you can buy to capture those special moments.

Heavy, Expensive

Best standard zoom on the F mount by far (for FX) - only downside is the size and the price tag.
-
+
- Insanely sharp - f/2.8 - Weather sealed - Good bokeh - Very fast focusing
-
-
- It's $1800 - Quite large for a standard zoom
