The Nikon AF-S Nikkor 85mm f/1.8G is a light and compact lens that's ideal for portraiture. It's quite sharp, and equally affordable.

  • +

Excellent sharpness. Minimal distortion. Wide aperture. Inexpensive.

  • -

Lacks optical stabilization. Limited close focus capability.

The Nikon AF-S 85mm f/1.8G promises excellent performance at what is an extremely versatile prime focal length

For a number of years, I had been considering a Nikon 85mm portrait lens. Earlier when the top-of-the-line Nikon 85mm lens was the f1.4 AF-D, I decided to wait until an AF-S version was available. In August 2010, Nikon finally introduced the 85mm/f1.4 AF-S at $1700.

When nikon introduced its full-frame D4 for pros in January, it also had something for its amateur fans: the 85mm f/1.8G AF-S Nikkor ($500, street)—the fifth 85mm for FX bodies in its current catalog.

Nikon has produced an excellent update to the long-lived 85mm Æ’/1.8D: while autofocus performance isn't quite as fast in the 85mm Æ’/1.8G, the majority of photographers using this lens probably won't be using it in applications that demand superfast focusing, anyway.

With an f/1.8 portrait lens this sweet, who needs f/1.4?

The Nikkor AF-S 85mm f/1.8 G is an excellent lens. It performs on a very high level in almost any regard, even on the high resolution DX sensor of the Nikon D7000. Sharpness is excellent in the image center straight from the largest aperture, the borders and corners deliver very good resolution wide...

The Nikon AF-S 85/1.8 struggles a bit at its largest aperture on the tiny CX sensor, but stopped down the results are very good to excellent. As can be expected from a lens designed for a much larger sensor, distortion and vignetting are no issues at all. CAs are very low, too.

In preparing for a trip to India and Nepal, I tested my Nikon 85mm f/1.8G lens on my Nikon D500. The lens worked extremely well and is relatively small and light weight for traveling.

I had wanted to get an 85mm prime lens for some time but never did. I finally pulled the trigger in early Apr. 2017 and I couldn't be happier with this lens. I had rented and shot with the f/1.4G version of the lens but I was not happy due to its softness wide open.

Excellent lens Does well in low light conditions. Auto focus doesn't perform well. Switched it to manual focus & it remedied the "problem"

  • +

sharp, excellent in low light, beautiful bokeh (manual focus)

  • -

the auto focus is a bit sluggish.

Sharpness is well covered by the technical review - in use this is not a lens you need to pixel peep to see if it's better. The pictures just hop off the page and tell you. How would I describe the effect in one word "clarity".

  • +

Jaw dropping colour and clarity, inexpensive.

I use this lens on my Nikon D5100 for natural light portraits and grandkids volleyball & basketball photos. Focus speed is good in qym lighting. Although I haven't completely tested it, some reviews show best sharpness & quality at f4 to f8. Very pleased with results so far.

  • +

Fast / accurate auto-focus, Nice Bokeh
