The only thing not to like about this lens is its high price, even though the added cost does bring genuinely improved performance. A mark has been deducted from the overall Performance figure for the trace of chromatic aberration at f/1.4 and for marginally less ‘bite’ than was expected in...
Solid MTF figures

Nikon's flagship wide aperture portrait lens receives a facelift, gaining a silent-wave focusing motor and Nano Crystal Coatings to reduce ghosting and flare. Here, Gary Wolstenholme takes a look at how it performs.
Good resolution performance, Beautiful out of focus blur, Excellent build quality, Negligible levels of CA, Good resistance to flare and ghosting
Maybe a touch pricey, but you get what you pay for
I traded my old 85mm 1.4d for this newer lens. The new lens is sharper, it's nicer to focus since the focus overide that doesn't require changing from auto to manual and then re-aimimg the lens. The hood is much easier to use and store since it inverts on the lens for storing.
I already have the 1.8g version, however having tried the 1.4g, I must say I prefer the 1.8g. The 1.8g is sharper at comparable apertures, and by f2.8, I can't see any discernible differences, and neither can my wife. We're both computer graphics professionals by the way.
This lens is absolutely the best. Pick your parameter, pick your criteria. This lens will surpass any expectation you may have in terms of performance. Low lighting, bright lighting, indoors, or outside. I've matched it with a D-600 and the results have been fabulous.
This is just a superlative lens! Up until now, I have been lugging my 70-200 mm f/2.8 for serious portraits. This 85mm does all the zoom did and more. The Image quality is incredible, Focus with my old D3S is fast and precise, Colors are rich and true.
I just received this lens yesterday after a six week wait due to a back order issue, however after using it for just one day it was well worth the wait. This lens so far is the best lens of this focal length that I have ever used. Great Lens!
