The Nikon AF-S Nikkor 80-400mm f/4.5-5.6G ED VR lens offers the convenience of a long range and doesn't show a lot of distortion, but images lose some crispness when zoomed all the way in.

  • +

Strong sharpness through most of range. Long telephoto reach. Optical stabilization. Minimal distortion. Relatively lightweight. Includes tripod collar and hood.

  • -

Sharpness dips at 400mm and toward edges of frame. Pricey.

Considering that this opticis only a tad slower than the Nikkor 200-400mm f/4, with a drop of a stop when you zoom out, has a 5x zoom range, is lighter, and costs about half of the near $7000 price tag of the 200-400mm f/4, it is certainly worthy of consideration for those who can appreciate what it...

Overall this is a really impressive lens. Its only real drawbacks are its high mass and substantial price but these are also factors that arise directly from the amount of technology that is packed inside.

  • +

5x zoom range; Sophisticated VR system; High MTF results; Fringe-free images; Reliable AF system; Focus limiter; Weatherproof design; Tripod mounting collar

  • -

    Rather heavy; Costly

Most people who are interested in an 80-400mm zoom will use the lens on its long end most of the time, namely around 300 to 400mm. Otherwise, there are a number of less bulky, more affordable 70-200mm and 70-300mm options.

Of all the lenses in Nikon's range, their 80-400mm offering has been long overdue an update for quite some time. The old lens had a reputation for being slow slow and clunky. Thankfully this new lens couldn't easily be labelled as either of these thanks to the inclusion of a silent wave autofocus...

Optically this lens is excellent, producing very sharp photos on both full-frame and sub-frame cameras even at wide-open apertures throughout the zoom range. Other image quality factors like chromatic aberration, distortion and vignetting were all well behaved and minimal.

Without any doubts the Nikkor AF-S 80–400 mm f/4.5–5.6G ED VR is optically a good lens with a very good autofocus and simply ensational image stabilization. It won’t provide such sharp images as those you can get from the Canon EF 100–400 mm f/4.5–5.6L IS II USM or the Sigma S 150–600 mm f/5–6.3 DG...

  • +

good quality casing,, very good image quality in the frame centre, no matter what focal length you employ,, good image quality on the edge of the APS-C sensor,, slight chromatic aberration,, lack of spherical aberration problems,, imperceptible distortion,, good control of vignetting, even on full...

  • -

image quality on the edge of full frame should have been better,, too many flares and too low contrast during the work against bright light.

Nikon camera owners have been crying out for an update to the 80-400mm lens for an age, and now it's here it proves itself to be worth the wait. It delivers crisp images, focuses swiftly and is a pleasure to use.

  • +

Excellent sharpness, Fast silent focusing, Very low CA, Low distortion, Weather sealed, Effective VR system

  • -

Could be considered expensive at current prices

I purchased this lens for use with my D750, along with the Kirk collar. I only shot with it for a few weeks, but the results were impressive. Without any focus adjustment, it was very sharp; focus was fast and accurate. The VR seemed to work very well.

This is a great lens for anyone who wants to be able to get stunning photographs of wildlife. The ease of use is fantastic. Easy to understand user manual, and the lens does what you need it to do, first time, every time.

I previously rented and tested Nikon's other enthusiast super-tele zoom, the 200-500, and you can see my review on this site. I was almost ready to buy one of those, but eventually decided to buy this one instead. For me, the 80-400 offers all the benefits of the 200-500, with less of the burdens.

  • +

Excellent resolution, color rendition and image stabilization. Instant autofocus in most situations.

  • -

A bit heavy. High price. Worthless tripod collar.

If you can only afford one lens for your new camera this is it! Also a great add on no matter what other lenses you have. Gives you a decent close range option for everyday use and then gives you the power of a super telephoto lens. I only wish that I had gotten this lens when it first came out.

This lens takes excellent high resolution photographs throughout the zoom range and has a fast enough maximum aperture to work even on cloudy days beyond the flash range.

  • +

Excellent quality and fine detail images.

    Non that I can see.

Great lens for shooting sports and nature. Excellent focal length and speed for the price. Must use a mono or tripod for all day shooting- it gets a bit heavy after a while.

Solid lens on D500. Not quite as sharp as the 200-500 F5.6, but very good. Good AF performance and very hand holdable.

Bought just as it came out in 2013 for a Tanzania safari - yes, was more than I was eager to spend but when considering cost of trips - vs either Sigma and Tokina - didnt make sense - would I do another Africa photo safari?
