Overall this is a really impressive lens. Its only real drawbacks are its high mass and substantial price but these are also factors that arise directly from the amount of technology that is packed inside.

Considering that this opticis only a tad slower than the Nikkor 200-400mm f/4, with a drop of a stop when you zoom out, has a 5x zoom range, is lighter, and costs about half of the near $7000 price tag of the 200-400mm f/4, it is certainly worthy of consideration for those who can appreciate what it...

Most people who are interested in an 80-400mm zoom will use the lens on its long end most of the time, namely around 300 to 400mm. Otherwise, there are a number of less bulky, more affordable 70-200mm and 70-300mm options.

Of all the lenses in Nikon's range, their 80-400mm offering has been long overdue an update for quite some time. The old lens had a reputation for being slow slow and clunky. Thankfully this new lens couldn't easily be labelled as either of these thanks to the inclusion of a silent wave autofocus...

Bought this lens for a couple of holidays. One to Morocco and one to Yosemite. Performed well in both situations. Morocco was a combitrip of bright skies and dark walks through the souks and medinas. It performed equally well in both scenarios.

The lens came up a little short, because my 55-300mm Nikon could reach about the same distance and almost as clear.I also found this lens very heavy and hard to work with.BUT I did not use it on a tripod much, I love nature walks and carrying my lens with me.

Perfect with my D800, easy to use,Only have had this for two weeks so have just tried it around the yard and woods. Great focusing speed and accuracy, image stabilization seems right on and pictures have been clear and vivid.

Excellent lens with such a versatile focal range. Downside is that it is about $600 too expensive considering it does not have flourite elements. Highly recommend purchasing one, but wait for Nikon to offer a lens discount/rebate to do so.

This Nikon 80-400mm second generation lens is a significant improvement over the original lens (Nikon's first VR lens). Not only is the auto focus on this newer lens faster, due to the introduction of the AF-S function, the optics are redesigned as well.

Great lens for shooting sports and nature. Excellent focal length and speed for the price. Must use a mono or tripod for all day shooting- it gets a bit heavy after a while.
