This thing is MASSIVE and Heavy. More importantly, it is AMAZING!!!! Super fast and tack sharp, mount this to an FX body and find anything on the field, in the bush or on the surf and hold on to your memory cards because its going to be a lot of fun.
I have used this lens in a Government testing enviroment. I can be a long way off and still capture crisp clean sharp images. I highly recomend this lens.
Consistent Output, Durable, Easy To Clean, Sharp Focus, Strong Construction
Heavy, Need a pod with this one
I wish I could say that I own this lens, but I don't. I have had the opportunity to borrow it on two different trips and it is everything I daydreamed it would be--sharp, fast and all that great magnifying power is unreal.
This is a must get lens if your serious about sports or wildlife photography. It take incredibly accurate and clear shots that are well worth the money. A must buy!
this lens is out of this world. I was thinking of getting a tamron 150-600mm lens, so glad i didn't. i tried the tamron 600 the other day, and i was so disappointed with it, it's a good lens, but if you want pure quality then the nikon 600f4 is the only lens to buy.
I made a huge error buying this lens. Like many (I suspect) I tried to settle for a cheaper solution. I tried the 70-200 f2.8. It was pretty good, but... Then I bought a 300mm f2.8...and then the teleconverters to give me 600mm at f6.3. Then I decided to take the plunge...and buy the 500mm f4.
This is the best lens I have come across. I use with with my Nikon D300 on a Wimberly head + Gitzo tripod. I get sharp images of wild life and birds. I am trying to put this to good use for my Lunar Astrophotography and this does an awesome job.
Big lenses are not for everyone. Heavy, long and somewhat cumbersome to protect and care for while in the field - all that goes away once you're set up and feel the glee of the auto focus homing in on the target.
As an addendum to my review of a year ago, I now own this lens and can say that it is the best lens I own. Fantastic! Excellent results, even with the 1.4x teleconverter. Incredible images. Comparing this lens to my other telephoto lenses, is like comparing a Cadillac to a Chevy.
Yes, every once in a while I handhold this lens. And I can do so for a short time before I give up. I really should do it more often since it's great for developing upper body strength. If you need a long lens, this is the lens to get.
