The Nikon AF-S Nikkor 50mm f/1.8G Special Edition is optically identical to the standard version of the lens, but is priced higher.

  • +

Sharp. Compact. Wide aperture. Internal focus motor.

  • -

No vibration reduction or aperture ring. Priced higher than standard version of lens based only on cosmetic changes.

Overall, 50mm primes are rather unglamorous lenses that can look out-dated in a world where zooms are truly dominant. In fact they are often high performers despite their low prices and are therefore worthy of very serious consideration. There is little to fault in Nikon’s latest G-series 50mm lens.

  • +

    Fantastic full-frame performance

  • -

Some chromatic aberration on DX-format sensor

For years, the popular and affordable 50mm/f1.8 was only available as an AF-D lens that cannot auto focus on today’s consumer DSLRs such as the earlier D40 to the current D3100 and D5100. This new AF-S version is a very welcome addition.

The Nikkor AF-S 50mm f/1.8G is an affordable prime lens for Nikon's range of FX and DX format DSLRs, and as an AF-S model, it'll autofocus on any Nikon body.

This update to Nikon's venerable 50mm f/1.8G has a lot to live up to, as the reputation of the older D version that it is amongst Nikon's sharpest optics will be a hard task to live up to.

First I must say I own both 1.4 and 1.8 versions. Simply put: there is no reasonable argument to go for the 1.4G version, the end. First of all, almost no difference in results when you compare 1.4 and 1.8 images. Half the price.

This is the lens you need for those vibrant, uber-sharp images in low-light conditions. I got this lens to take photos of my young son, and the results cannot be more impressive! Absolutely fantastic Bokeh effects too.

  • +

This is probably the best lens you can buy for portraits/close-ups

  • -

Only for close photography, no zoom

This is a very sharp lens. I was debating whether to get the f/1.8D or f/1.8G because the D version would save me money. I ended deciding on the G version. I own a few older lens that were manufactured in Japan and those lens were solidly built although a little heavy, and they all feel tough and...

KIT lenses do not do the cameras that they come with justice. This is the equivalent of 75mm on a crop sensor if you aren't using a full frame camera. Fantastic for indoor shots/portraits of any kind.

  • +

Fast auto focusing Excellent Bokeh Fantastic Image Quality, much better than KIT lens Great low light performance coupled with current generation Nikon cameras.

  • -

Twice the price of the equivalent Canon model. But I chose a Nikon camera for a reason, so that's ok.

I am really amazed at the quality of photos from this lens... I didn't expect it to be that good. Makes photos nearly look 3D. Super shape pics.

There are lots of review from almost every photography website, thus I don't have to repeat what others have said. I use this lens primarily for my baby to come. I bought it early because of the Nikon rebate and to get use to it.

I have been extremely happy with this purchase even after months of use. I use this lens daily and it works wonderfully. It takes great pictures with the ever popular blurry backgrounds. I blog and have gotten several compliments on the photo quality of my images.

I'm new to the DSLR community so I did some research on what lens would be the best fit for my needs...mainly taking photos of my nine month old. I'm so glad I chose this lens - the photos I've taken with it are beautiful.

This is my first lens besides the 18-55mm non-VR kit lens that I use with my D3000. I am just beginning to expand my photography and I cannot believe I have used any other lens besides this one. The kit lens feels barbaric! The autofocus is super fast even in low light.

Dont think just get it. 35mm nikkor is also another excellent lens, but the bokeh for portrait is better with this lens. If you can afford then you better buy 85mm lens which is mostly for the portrait. This lens works on Nikon D3000, D3200, D3100, D5000's D7000 and much more. Go for it
