The Nikon 35mm f1.8G ED put in a good performance and proved to be a worthy member of Nikon's line-up of f1.8 primes. It's a step-up in performance compared to the old Nikon AF 35/2.0D in every aspect: sharpness, contrast, coma, light fall-off and bokeh. Plus it has a built-in silent focus-motor.

  • +

Good to very good quality in the DX image-circle., Quiet and reliable AF operation., Weather sealing at the lens-mount., Little flare/glare.

  • -

Longitudinal CA often seen in the background., Weak performance in the extreme FX-corners., Somewhat nervous Bokeh.

Some buyers will treasure the extra f-stop of lens speed and the additional selective-focusing opportunities that the wider aperture brings. The chances are, therefore, that anybody who can live with the DX-format restriction and who won’t need a macro capability is likely to be highly delighted by...

The AF-S Nikkor 35mm F1.8G DX is a lens which certainly caused a degree of dismay on its release, with many Nikon fans disappointed by the decision to make it compatible with the DX format only.

  • +

Excellent image quality when stopped down just a little, Fast and accurate autofocus with full-time manual override, Generally attractive rendition of out-of-focus regions ('bokeh'), Resistant to flare, Low price

  • -

Slightly soft and low in contrast wide open, Lateral chromatic aberration somewhat higher than traditional 50mm 'standard' primes, Prone to purple fringing and bokeh chromatic aberration, most visible at large apertures

Among DSLR shooters, there are two types of people: photographers who prefer using zoom lenses and photographers who prefer using primes. I am most certainly a member of the latter group.

If you’re a Nikon shooter and you’ve been contemplating buying a reasonably priced, professional prime lens, you should give serious consideration to the new NIKKOR AF-S DX 35mm f/1.8G. What makes this lens so special?

This compact wide aperture lens for DX compatible Nikon digital SLRs costs around £170 and provides a similar angle of view to a 50mm lens used on a 35mm camera and sports a silent focusing motor.

The first DX Nikkor with the classic advantages of a high-speed "normal" lens ($220, street), this 52mm full-frame equivalent is also the fastest DX and widest nonfisheye digital-only Nikkor prime.

I got this lens for low-light event and general purpose walk-around use, and it's great for this. It's light and yields nice photos with good color, contrast and detail on my D4 and D750. It's just OK at f1.8, and really gets sharp by f2.8.

One of the best prime lens for DX format. A must for all photography enthusiasts. Keep them zoom lenses aside and try thus prime you will realise what you've been missing. The wide aperture gets dreamy bokeh and will make your subject pop.

The good prime lens for the price

If it's Bokeh you're after, take a look at the 50mm instead. Better for portraits on an APS-C/DX body too.

  • +

A fine lens. Small, light and FAST.

  • -

Avoid Always.Deals. They advertise as having the full five year Nikon warranty but ship grey market imports with ZERO warranty.

This was a Christmas gift for my daughter who is in a secondary school taking photography. She asked for this lens specifically and was surprised to actually see it over the holidays! She loves it.

Buy this for your prime lens, use for portraits, wide angle, sharp, and fast. It will give you a background blur for portraits, better than the 50mm, and faster!! Using it with my Nikon D3300.

In a world of zoom lenses I had a need for a single focal length lens that opened down to f1.8. This lens fills the need admirably, good sharpness, easy to use and carry. If you have the same need, I recommend this lens.

I used the lens for a portrait and product shoot. 35mm is a perfect length, every photographer should have one of these.

I was going to change cameras. I have a Nikon D 7000. Great indoor photos with either lens. Outdoor landscape photos did not have the crispness and clarity I wanted and expected from Nikon. Buying this Prime lens was the answer to that.

I went back and forth wondering if I should get the 35mm or 50mm. I went with the 35mm and am really pleased. The only downside is not having VR. Overall great pictures and awesome Bokeh! Bokeh is the main reason I wanted to get a fixed lens and this is a great start for me.

The lens is amazing, takes in a lot of light, inside the house especially. Outside it's very sharp and takes great pictures, it is a fixed lens, which means you do the zooming with your legs, but the results are great.
