Nikon AF-S Nikkor 28mm f/1.8G Review - Top-quality, full-frame, wide-angle lens
![]() |
Optically, this new Nikon 28mm/f1.8 AF-S is excellent in every way with very good center sharpness wide open and excellent corner performance by f4. By f5.6 to f8, it can produce wonderful landscape images with corner-to-corner sharpness.
![]() |
The latest of Nikon’s high-speed, full-frame, wide-angle primes, the 28mm f/1.8G ($699, street) falls between the budget-busting 24mm ($1,999) and 35mm ($1,649) f/1.4Gs and the affordable 28mm f/2.8D ($275).

Handling and Features This brand new compact wide angle lens from Nikon costs around £620 and sports a bright f/1.8 maximum aperture, silent internal focusing and nano-crystal coatings to help control ghosting and flare.
![]() |
Wide-aperture vignetting is more noticeable than in Nikon's 24mm lens and it's not quite as sharp, but image quality is very good overall.

It is fully understandable that full frame, professional 1.4/24, 1.4/28 or 1.4/35 lenses can cost as much as 5,000 – 7,000 PLN. In such constructions, fast and wide-angle, every producer tries to use the newest and optics, the best possible, closing it in a very solid casing made in Japan.

very good image quality in the frame centre,, good or decent image quality on the edge of the frame,, slight lateral chromatic aberration,, well-corrected distortion,, negligible astigmatism,, low coma on the APS-C/DX sensor,, quick, silent and accurate autofocus.

slack on the focusing ring,, very high longitudinal chromatic aberration,, significant spherical aberration,, high coma in the corners of full frame,, significant vignetting on full frame.

Those looking for a wide angle prime lens with a fast maximum aperture, who find the price of the current crop of f/1.4 lenses prohibitive, may want to take a long hard look at this lens.

Excellent optical performance, Silent focusing, Low CA, Low distortion, Compact and lightweight, Relatively good value (when compared to f/1.4 alternatives)

Falloff of illumination towards the corners at wide apertures
I purchased this lens during one of the Nikon sale event ($100). Despite some passionate love-it or hate-it reviews I found online I have grown to appreciate this lens.Let me be clear: this lens is not as sharp as a Sigma ART lens nor as versatile as a nifty 50.
I love the feel, look and how quiet this lens is. Superb on the D800. Fast, accurate and images are sharp and beautiful in tone and contrast. I'm not a zoom lens type gal so this lens fits so many needs from landscape, to portraits...its just wonderful!
Oh boy, this is a one unique and interesting lens. I bought it used just few months ago. I read many online reviews but you know how misleading that can be. Anyway, I decided to give it a try and I'm so glad I did.

Nothing really
This lens is fast, quiet and easy to use. I recommend it to anyone who wants or needs a versatile wide angle lens.
If you are thinking to buy or not this lens, I would say go for it. This 28mm lens is unbelievable sharp, fast and lightweight. Fits PERFECTLY on my D700 and D750. First I wanted to go for 24mm but for what I do 28mm is wide enough. Very happy whith it.
Had the lens for about a year and hadn't used it much but recently put it on my Nikon D7200 for a recent shoot, flawless now is my go to lens..J
This is a must have lens as I enjoy what prime lenses bring to my photography. Zoom lenses are great but this prime lens along with many other primes delivers.
