The Nikon AF-S Nikkor 28-300mm f/3.5-5.6G ED VR is a sharp, compact walkaround lens, but it shows quite a lot of distortion throughout its zoom range.

  • +

Sharp throughout zoom range. 10.7x zoom ratio. Optical stabilization. Relatively compact.

  • -

Loads of distortion. Soft edges at maximum aperture.

With a nearly 11x zoom range this brand new addition to Nikon's line-up is clearly worthy of serious attention...

  • +

    Excellent all in one lens

Nikon has answered the call of FX (full-frame) camera users to provide a lens comparable to their ultra-popular NIKKOR AF-S 18–200mm f/3.5–5.6G VR II DX-format lens with their new AF-S 28–300mm f/3.5–5.6G ED VR.

  • +

Great focal range in one lens

Is Nikon's new 28-300mm the ideal travel lens for FX format cameras? Here Gary Wolstenholme puts the lens through its paces.

  • +

Good optical performance for a lens of this type, Fast silent focusing, Vibration reduction is very effective, Build quality

  • -

Maybe a bit on the pricey side, Distortion at 28mm and 300mm

Anyone considering a super zoom should be aware of the fact that any such lens is full of compromises to achieve the huge focal range. This is, unfortunately, especially true for the Nikon AF-S 28-300 VR.

The main advantage of an interchangeable lens camera is obviously its interchangeable lenses, which theoretically allow photographers to use the correct lens for any specific subject or conditions.

  • +

Long zoom range, Effective image stabilization, Very sharp, Perfect for FX sensor bodies

  • -

    Size and weight, Obvious distortion

If you only compare the number of pros and cons, you can see that the Nikkor 28-300 mm VR, although bigger, heavier and more expensive, is worse than the best 18-200 mm class lenses. It only shows that full frame forces constructors of such big zooms to face really serious problems.

  • +

wide and useful focal lengths range,, good build quality,, very good image quality in the frame centre,, slight distortion on DX sensor,, low astigmatism,, vignetting on DX sensor not bothersome at all,, efficient image stabilization,, silent and relatively accurate autofocus.

  • -

weak image quality on the edge of DX and full frame as well,, very high distortion on full frame,, high chromatic aberration at longer focal lengths,, significant coma in full frame corners,, noticeable problems during work against bright light.

I reviewed this lens about two years ago and I need to update the review after extensive use. I continue to read how this lens is a compromise of design, maybe so! Reviewers state several reason why they feel that way so I will write why it is so good.

An excellent zoom lens that delivers good crisp photos. I have had the lens for only a week or so. No extensive photographing as yet.

    Like the output.

A bit heavy but worth the cost!

If you can have just one lens, this is it!! Ken Rockwell said this lens is sharp through out its entire zoom range and he was right! I do a lot of landscape shots and this lens can go pretty wide at 28mm,then you can zoom big time to capture things that look a long way away and bring them in...

Easy To Use, Fast / Accurate Auto-Focus, Good Image Quality

Good all round lens, I had the 18-200mm on my d7000 it is the only lens I use, and for my d800e the 28-300 zoom lens will probably be my walk around lens, but for portraits and really fine photography I will use the Micro-Nikkor 105mm f/2.8 lens.

  • +

I recently bought a Nikon d800e, brilliant, but needed fx lenses, first lens I bought was a f/2.8 105mm again brilliant, but needed a zoom, I have the 18-200mm dx zoom for my d7000 again a wonderful lens, I bought the 28-300mm from Jessops, (I got £70 back from Nikon thru their Christmas money back...

I am still learning about this lens, It's not quite as sharp as I would have hoped, but this may be my fault I was not using a tripod and at 300mm you had better have a steady hand even with VR.

I owned the Nikon 18-200mm which I enjoyed and was sharp to about 120mm but was soft at the long end. The 28-300mm is a much sharper lens and is sharp from 200-300mm. I'm really enjoying this lens and can't believe how good the build quality is. There is no lens creep like the 18-200mm.

  • +

Awesome optics, Not soft on long end, No lens creep, Psuedo macro, Excellent Build Quality, Fantastic clarity

It is definately heavier than most lenses of this range. The lens has very smooth zoom but it is firm. I personally like the stiffness as i had a Tameron comperable lens and every time it hung down the lens zoom would extend itself to full length and then unveriably you would bang it.
