If you're a fan of an ultra-wide perspective, the Nikon AF-S DX Nikkor 10-24mm f/3.5-4.5G ED lens delivers, but you'll need to narrow its aperture to improve edge sharpness.

  • +

Ultra-wide field of view. 2.4x zoom ratio. Excellent center sharpness.

  • -

Pricey. Image quality suffers at the edges of the frame. Noticeable distortion at 10mm.

Nikon’s new 10-24mm zoom is mightily similar to the previous 12-24mm version. What Digital Camera reviews the Nikkor AF-S 10-24mm f/3.5-4.5G ED DX lens...

Back in 2004, Nikon pioneered the DX lens concept; that is, lenses specially designed for the smaller DX-format sensor (16×24mm), popular for digital SLRs. Since their image circles do not need to cover the entire traditional 35mm film area (24×36mm), these DX lenses are less expensive to produce...

The internal-focusing Nikkor is the company's widest DX zoom, with a 2.4X range that scales up to the full-frame equivalent of 15-36mm on Nikon DX bodies. Extra-low Dispersion (ED) elements combat chromatic aberration, and aspheric elements fight linear distortion.

Nikon has done well with its new ultra-wide angle zoom lens: it's a sharp lens, with corners that don't get significantly soft. CA performance is good, probably excellent on a D3, D300 or other Nikon body that employs CA reduction.

This ultra-wide angle zoom lens for Nikon DX format SLRs costs around £670 and sports fast silent internal focusing with full time manual override. At only 460g, it is a quite a lightweight lens too and it balances perfectly on the Nikon D300 body used for testing.

Overall the 10-24mm Nikkor puts in a respectable performance, producing images of excellent sharpness, especially when used at optimum apertures. The issue with softness towards the corners at maximum aperture is worth being aware of, but this shouldn't pose too may issues for most users.

  • +

Excellent sharpness in the centre, Very low vignetting for an ultra-wide, Good build, Handles well, Lightweight

  • -

Softness in far corner regions at maximum aperture, Flare when shooting into the light

Nikon's venerable 12-24mm ultrawide zoom has the benefit of a reasonably fast f/4 aperture that remains constant throughout the zoom range. By contrast, the newer 10-24mm lens has a variable f/3.5-4.5 maximum aperture but, crucially, it extends the zoom range where it matters most: at the wide-angle...

I recently tested my Nikkor 10-24 mm DX ultra wide angle zoom lens on my new Nikon D500 camera body, at the Palomar Observatory in Northern San Diego County, California, to determine if I would take this lens to India and Nepal for sweeping panoramic views of the Himalaya Mountain Range.

If you're a DX shooter and want a versatile wide angle lens that is super sharp, this is the lens for you. I am not a fan of off-brand equipment as I have never had good success with it.

I've had this lens for three years now and it is the lens that is on my camera most of the time. I've taken lots of pictures with it ranging from landscapes to indoors and as a travel walk around. I find it to be sharp and well built - no regrets here.

The autofocus on my lens failed after only 4 months. To make it even worse it was during a once-in-a-lifetime trip to Yap Island. Nikon IS repairing it under warranty.

This is one awesome lens! Took it on a NYC photowalk. Got some great shots! Fast auto focus. Anyone considering this lens, don't let the price stop you. It is absolutely worth it!

Good little lens for its purpose. I have used it with a D7k for interiors and if you stay away from flare points and shoot with a little care, the CA is not too bad (manageable with software corrections). The range is great and is reminiscent of when I shot Canon with the 16-35. About as sharp too.

  • +

Range, usefulness for Architectural photography on a crop body. The focus is dead on (rare for this type of lens IMO).

  • -

CA, distortion (although I don't care too much as it's easily correctable).
