It is certainly powerful and does not make any compromises in terms of performance, and now even with a surprisingly good runtime of 10 hours. The Book easily beats the competition. But: Surface Pro 4 Core i7 and the i5 sibling are in the same ballpark – except for the runtime, which is a surprise.

  • +

high-quality case made of magnesium alloy, CPU and GPU performance of a notebook in a convertible, no serious CPU or GPU throttling, good runtime of 10 hours, high resolution, bright display also for outdoor use, native 3:2 aspect ratio for picture editing, accurate colors and high contrast; 96 %...

thicker and heavier than 13- and 14-inch Ultrabooks, no USB-C or HDMI, no WWAN or RJ-45, no SmartCard reader or fingerprint scanner, no secondary storage device, no TrackPoint or dedicated mouse buttons, software-undocking still prone to errors, bad upgradeability, tablet warm under load, high price

The new Microsoft Surface Book may only be a simple iteration of last year's beloved tablet newcomer, but it packs some powerful upgrades and fantastic battery life, making the very good even better. It's just a lot more expensive.

  • +

Segment-leading performance. Almost 20 hours of battery life. Discrete GeForce GTX 965M graphics. Same slim, versatile design as the original. Multiple configuration options. Last year's Performance Base is compatible with this year's Surface Book.

  • -

    Pricey. Angular shape when closed.

The design remains mostly unchanged, but PC power users will like the extra power and battery life on the updated 2016 version of the Surface Book.

  • +

Improved speed, graphics and battery life in a similar, crisp design. Detachable tablet comes included, as does the Surface Pen. Has USB ports and SD card slot.

  • -

It's also slightly thicker and heavier than last year's version, and retains the odd gap on the folding hinge. Expensive compared to other options. Doesn't meet minimum specs for VR gaming.

When Microsoft announced details of the Surface Book i7, I was pretty disappointed in its middle-aged hardware.

  • +

Super-long battery life, Best graphics performance in a 13-inch convertible, Beautiful screen and good pen support

  • -

Very expensive, Heavy for a 13-inch ultrabook convertible, No Thunderbolt 3.0 nor USB 10Gbps

So what? You’ll still have as good a Windows laptop as there’s ever been. And for now, that’s more than enough.

  • +

It's a laptop. A great laptop. Finally, a Windows computer without stickers and logos everywhere. The keyboard and trackpad are excellent---and if you don't like them pen and touch work just great. Screen is gorgeous, and there's plenty of power behind it.

  • -

Detaching and re-attaching comes with some pain. This is a very expensive laptop.

If pricing isn't an issue you for you and you want the best, most powerful Windows convertible, then we say go for it—especially if you need more graphics muscle than you can get from the integrated silicon in most of the competition.

  • +

Stunning screen, Improves upon epic battery life of original, Powerful and light as a big-screen tablet

  • -

Extremely expensive as configured, Tablet portion has very short battery life, Not exactly light at 3.6 pounds, No USB-C/Thunderbolt ports

While pricey, Microsoft has created a laptop that I could picture myself ditching my MacBook Air for. I love the sharp and colorful touch display, very long battery life and swift overall performance. The keyboard and touchpad are also comfortable, although I wished scrolling were a bit smoother.

Going into Microsoft’s fall Windows 10 event in New York City on October 26th, the company was not expected to announce a new Surface Book or Surface Pro. However, in something of a surprise announcement, Panos Panay, corporate vice president of devices at Microsoft and head of the Surface team,...

While Microsoft’s line of Surface Pro tablets has proven popular among a certain crowd of productivity enthusiasts, they haven’t managed to truly replace a laptop for most users. Acknowledging that is the case after three generations of Surface Pros, the company has taken alternate direction in the...

  • +

The best hybrid design yet. Fantastic display complemented by the included stylus. Great performance, especially with the dedicated GPU. Excellent battery life.

  • -

A collection of software issues hasn’t been fixed months after launch. Compromised cooling solution. The hinge doesn’t fully close. Expensive for a laptop, expensive for a hybrid.

Some days I’ll be seated on my couch, other days I’ll be seated on the floor of a convention center or press event, so I need a laptop that just works and won’t annoy me when I’m in the middle of writing an article.

  • +

Great keyboard and trackpad, Amazing battery life, 3:2 display is ideal for webpages

  • -

That weird gap, Display wobbles and feels top heavy, A little bulky as a laptop

The concept and design of a tablet with a keyboard was great, but it died way too young and Microsoft provided abysmal support. The charging system is also weak - you must plug into AC and you cannot charge a USB device from the computer.

  • +

    nice design and concept

  • -

had many breakdowns for no reason and died after only 17 months

Although I am not a verfied purchaser, I will place my review here because I own a Surface Book with Performance Base and these computers are awesome so it's worth sharing. I am an engineering student and a gamer. The tablet and pen allows me to use this computer as a notebook in class.

It works easily for AutoCAD, Revit, Solibri etc. Take off the screen for a portable experience (no real slowing in graphics for walkabouts, just battery life if your tour is extremely long).

As a lifelong MacBook Pro user, I was curious to try out the Surface Book to see what Microsoft has to offer. These are my thoughts of the Surface Book compared to my current Mac, which is the previous generation MacBook from 2015, the non touch bar version.

The best laptop ive ever used, more powerful and faster than most desktops as well and far outdoes any macbook. Starts up and is going in seconds, lightweight, fast and the detachable tablet is actually useful, if you can afford it get this and nothing else.
