MXL 603S Small-diaphragm condenser In my continuing quest to find a microphone that emulates a KM-84 for less money, when I was given the opportunity to check these mics out, I quickly said, “Yes”. This is a straight-ahead small diaphragm cardioid condenser that retails for $100.

I don't even record indoors with these, I take them out into forests, fields, swamps, blizzards, even rainstorms (with precautions!) and they always work. These are very nice sounding mics and have respectably low noise, but what impresses me most is how well they can withstand low temperatures,...

I am using the 603's to record live music in small (100-300 person) venues. I usually locate the pair near the front-of-house sound console (on a stand as high as I can get away with to minimize picking up audience chatter) and mix with a direct feed from the console.

We use this mic in two venues on our church campus. One is in our Audio/Video recording studio when we are recording live sounding videos for YouTube or Facebook. The other is as overheads for our cymbals within our drum booth. In both application they perform exceptionally.

Despite getting panned by some recordists, these are actually decent mics for the money... And the shock mounts work well... The case is a plus, and the stock cardioid capsules can be switched with the 603/4 omni capsules...

I am using these mics to record accoustic guitar. Initially I thought the sound was not so good relative to a similarly priced large diaphragm cartioid condenser mic, but then I positioned the 603s more carefully (near the junction between the neck and the body of the guitar) and the sound improved...

I used these mics with a Roland Quad-Capture to record solo accoustic guitar, and I compared them with a single side-address condenser mike having a similar size diafragm and similar price per unit. No equalization, compression, etc. was applied to the signal.

As far as I've used them, they've done pretty good. I love the quality.

I spent a lot of time searching for the best mics for the $. This is by far the best deal I have found. I am using these as drum overheads. They work great. I'm sure there are better mics out there, but nowhere near this price tag.

This is my 2nd pair of these. The 1st pair I use for recording acoustic guitar as a stereo pair and it greatly improves sound quality over one mic. The second pair is used to mic live drums at gigs.
