The Vario-Elmarit-SL 24-90mm f/2.8-4 ASPH. is the first standard zoom for the Leica SL system, and it doesn't disappoint.
Longer than average zoom range. Sharp optics. Minimal distortion. Dust- and splash-proof design. AquaDura lens coating. Close focus capability. Optical image stabilization.
Not a fixed f/2.8. Big and heavy. Noticeable vignette at 24mm. Expensive.
Magnificent German Optics. Excellent resolution, fast and accurate focus, strong construction. Yes, it is heavy, but in this case heaviness means Quality.
As it is the only SL mount lens right now, there is no comparison: it is the best zoom lens from Leica at the moment. While I don't want to compare it to S lenses, I believe the performance of this lens is extraordinary. It is relatively slow (2.8 - 4.0), but it is sharp as a tack.
