The Leica Q (Typ 116) is a niche camera, with a full-frame image sensor and a dedicated 28mm lens. It's not for every photographer, but it's fantastic at what it does.

  • +

Full-frame image sensor. Sharp, wide aperture lens. 6.7-inch macro mode. Fast autofocus. Large, crisp EVF. Touch-screen display. 1/16,000-sec electronic shutter. 10fps burst shooting. 1080p60 video recording. Includes Adobe Photoshop Lightroom. In-camera Wi-Fi.

  • -

Expensive. No built-in flash. Touch screen focus could be better implemented. Lacks 24fps video option.

The Leica Q is everything we expect a Leica to be. It’s amazingly well made; the build-quality and physical appearance are remarkable. It also produces images of exceptionally high quality.

The Leica Q is the most affordable full-frame Leica camera to date. Its 24MP sensor is good though not class-leading, and the fixed 28mm F1.7 Summilux lens is superb. The camera is built beautifully and responds rapidly.

Had it been announced by any other camera company in June of 2015, the Leica Q ($4,250) would have been a flagship camera: a compact body, full-frame sensor, optically stabilized and autofocusing 28mm f/1.7 lens, a huge electronic viewfinder and enough processing power to run an Apollo mission.

In the James Bond novels and films, Q is the oft-exasperated purveyor of high-tech gadgets that inevitably help 007 escape impossibly tight spots.

  • +

Super fast; gorgeous image quality; good low-light performance; responsive AF; Wi-Fi; touchscreen display; sharp EVF.

  • -

Limited video features; pricey; lens cap can inadvertently rotate aperture dial.

Buying a Leica camera is like buying a very expensive watch – it’s a luxury item. Hung around the necks of people who have no idea of photography, it is a status symbol.

The new Q is not cheap. Leica never ever is and while I was hoping for $3500 (I feel that would have been PERFECT and sold a ton of these for Leica), it appears the Q comes in at $4250, about $750 over my “hoped for” price. Yep, $4250. True Leica style ;) I loved my time with the Q.

Sometimes it just happens. You grab a camera for the first time and it immediately feels right. You turn it on, you take the first shots, you dig randomly into the menu feeling a little bit lost, but it doesn’t matter. Everything just looks great.

Leica just unveiled a slick, new compact camera this morning: the 24-megapixel, full frame Leica Q. The Leica Q camera features a Leica Summilux 28mm f /1.7 ASPH integrated lens and a host of features, making it Leica’s premium compact camera.

As an international documentary photographer, I had been looking for a digital camera that could give me quick response and high frame rates, be completely unobtrusive and whisper quiet, provide exceptional images while giving me great control with an easy to use menu.

The Leica Q has been thoroughly reviewed elsewhere so will keep this short. This camera is perhaps the most intuitive, easy-to-use, yet stunningly high-performing piece of kit I've ever used. While it can't replace a full DSLR setup nor has the versatility of interchangeable lenses, it's the camera...

Leica Q is very good camera The lens is of very high quality. With some practice, I think it is easy to use So far all photos taken with the Leica Q have been accurately focused. Even in dim light conditions.

I rented a Q for 9 days, and shot it at home in Maine, and a on long work trip that saw me with free time in LA and New York. I was ready to love it. I wanted to love it. I ended up deciding not to purchase. People rave about the “haptics.” Not me.

This feels like a product that just shouldn't exist, let alone made by Leica. The image quality is unbelievable, the ergonomics are lovely, and the build quality is superb. It's expensive for a fixed-lens camera, but when you look at the price of Leica glass, it's much easier to stomach.

I have never owned a camera with as good a combination of IQ and usability as the Leica Q. I also own a Sony RX1, and the Q puts it in the shade in almost every way. Autofocus is zippy fast and dead-on accurate. Manual focus works like a fine Leica MF lens. Colors are vibrant and neutral.
