The Pixel Slate is a better laptop than the iPad Pro, and a better tablet than the Surface Pro 6. However, the individual strengths of both of those devices outshine any one strength of the Pixel Slate.

  • +

Incredible display, Folio keyboard is innovative, Long-lasting battery life, Party-ready stereo speakers, Touch-friendly versatility

  • -

A bit too expensive, Lingering software issues, Drab design

Those looking for a Google alternative to the iPad Pro will appreciate Google’s latest tablet. But when you factor in the keyboard, you can get a more powerful, more capable Windows device for less.

  • +

Good display and excellent audio, Ever-improving ecosystem

  • -

Keyboard is expensive and heavy, Android integration still isn’t perfect, Expensive for its specs

If the Pixelbook demonstrated Google could make a compelling laptop, the Google Pixel Slate is its attempt to do the same for tablets. Like the latest iPad Pro, it’s a confident claim that what was once considered a pared-back, mobile OS can now wear Big Boy Pants and be everything you need to do...

  • +

Handsome, well-constructed hardware, Keyboard is comfortable to type on, Two USB-C ports are flexible, Screen is beautiful

  • -

Android app are still awkward on Chrome OS, No headphone jack or SD card reader, Pixel Slate Keyboard underwhelms in your lap, Expensive

The Pixel Slate is the best Chrome OS tablet ever made, but the operating system needs work if Google wants it to be an iPad Pro or Surface Pro killer.

  • +

Sleek design, Good keyboard and trackpad, Solid battery life, Google Assistant support is fantastic

  • -

App offering is lacking for power users and creatives, Android apps can crash/not work on occasion, Expensive for what it is

Reviewing the Pixel Slate was like reviewing two devices. Out of the box, it’s something of a high-end Android tablet running full-screen Play Store apps and a touch-friendly interface.

The Google Pixel Slate is better than just about any Android tablet when it comes to productivity. Naturally that depends on what you’re going to be asking it to do, but within the web environment, you’re getting a very powerful browser from Chrome and a great keyboard (sold separately).

  • +

Complete browser experience beats iOS/Android alternatives, Excellent keyboard (sold separately), Great design and build, Great speakers

  • -

Some UX foibles in tablet mode, It's expensive (especially when specced up), Some Android apps don't play nice

Gorgeous hardware, but there are too many small flaws for the Pixel Slate to command such a high price

  • +

Great speakers, Works well with Android and Linux apps, Case fits somewhat loosely

  • -

Chrome OS is a bit rough around the edges, Palm rejection issues with stylus, Too expensive for the specifications

The Pixel Slate is a perplexing mobile productivity device, combining the design and appeal of a flagship 2-in-1 tablet with the starting specs of the cheapest Chromebook. Will it rise to the top of 2-in-1 tablets? Only a full review will tell.

  • +

    Redesigned Chrome OS, Gorgeous display

  • -

Super pricey keyboard cover, Pen sold separately, Intel Celeron at entry level

The iPad dominates tablet 'mindshare' to such an extent that many people refer to the devices in general by Apple's brand - like the Hoover of mobile technology. But there are plenty of pretenders to the throne:

The hardware moves very smooth for anything I need it to do. Its nice that you can pull in linux apps. Im doing a lot of screen mirroring onto a TV and writing on the screen of the pixel slate with the pixelbook pen and its extremely responsive.
