I bought this along with a new Gitzo tripod. I like the tripod but am VERY UNHAPPY with the ballhead. The issue is that it uses the GS5370B Quick Release Plate. Everything works fine until you turn it to the portrait/vertical position. Then it is terrible.
I teamed this head with a new Gitzo GT2541EX 6X Carbon Fiber Tripod. Smooth is how I would characterize the operation of the head and the tripod.Well engineered and precise. My comment about the tripod being a good investment, not an expense, applies equally to the Gitzo GH2750 Series 2 Off Center...
This head is unusual in that it is possible to point the camera in any direction at all. It makes macro photography of an object below the tripod much easier. I chose it because of that feature. I use it with a Gitzo 2541 tripod. It is stable, but also small and light enough for travel.
This was a great head for sometime until the tilt knob became so hard to turn. I tried to use it yesterday and it has become impossible to turn even after over 24 hours of WD40! Did I tighten it so much? No. The darn thing just became stacked.
I've never had a ball head before so it took some getting used to, but I like it. It's compact and lightweight. The only thing that I don't like is that the base sometimes begins to unthread from the tripod (a sort of pseudo-pan), but there's really nothing to do about that.
I've had this item for over a year now. I find it easy to set up and quite stable. A D300 w battery pack and a 70-200 2.8 no problem very steady. This one is well built and finished well.
The primary purpose of a tripod is to hold the camera stationary and this one does not do that. The rubber (cork in earlier versions) on the plate slides and will not hold the camera stationary. In horizontal positions the head works OK.
I bought this tripod head and a matching tripod a few weeks ago. As soon as I started to use the head with the quick release plate, the camera started to move while it was locked in place, and I could not figure out why.
It's very versatile and reliable. It can hold my 80-400VR Nikkor without a counterweight in various positions. The two issues I have, are it's difficult to bevel and pan (no bubble), and it has knobs instead of rods making it more difficult to finely adjust.
I bought this with the GT2540 tripod, which is fantastic. But I had to replace this awful head. It's big, heavy, awkward and poorly made.First the latch spring came lose and was lost. Then the pin from the camera part of the quick release fell out.
