I got this to stabilize shots on hikes, etc. when I didn't want to lug the tripod. It's got a very beefy feel to it, but even with an attached ball-head, it's less than 2 pounds. I'm 5'9 and only extend the bottom section a little bit to get the viewer on my D80 eye-level.
