Impellers break off
I am on my third GFC520. The first two, after slightly more than 2 years, broke. In each case the impellers on the grinding plate separated. We are very careful what we grind - no bones, cut into small pieces before grinding etc. Assumed the first was an anomaly. Only bought a third since customer relations offered a $50 rebate, replacement installation is easy and maybe improvements were made in manufacture. The first two were GFC520Vs, the third is a GFC520N. The disposal function of grinding works well when impellers are in place and does not lock up.
Question has the impeller issue been addressed in the new model number?
I would not recommend unless there were improvements made in construction of the impeller attachments to the grinding plate.

One big failing.
I have just replaced the 2nd of the GFC520V series Garbage DisposAll units.
They worked fine for about 3 years, and both have failed the same way.
The cutters let loose because of wear and tear on them and the rivets that hold them in place. I have replaced the latest with a GFC520N only because of the ease in swapping it out. (no messing with the mounting hardware). Maybe the cutters and rivets should be of a harder wearing material

Seized twice after very light use within 1st year
Had this installed in our new home with septic system. Very light use perhaps once every couple of weeks for 2-3 people. When it runs its seems efficient and quiet, however it has frozen up twice within the past year. First time we couldn’t get the motor to turn using recommended methods and reviewed some YouTube videos. Hired a plumber who was surprised to learn there isn’t way to try to manually turn it (like other disposals) by using a hex wrench. Plumber ended up taking the unit apart the first time to get it to turn and reinstalled until 2 months later it’s frozen up again. Appears to be rust in the disposal. We’re about 14 months into a new home (past warranty) and this is the only item which has failed us - twice.

Good overall, quiet, easy install, but short life
This is an overall good disposal. Very easy to install, quiet and never clogged. My understanding was disposals last 8+ years on average. However, a little after two years it started leaking from the bottom (through the nut that holds the bottom cover in place). It seems like an internal gasket or seal failed. This disposal was not used heavily, so I was very disappointed that it failed so soon. But I'm giving it the benefit of the doubt and replaced it with the same disposal to avoid disturbing the pipe work. Will see how the new one turns out.

Great low-price disposall
This was the lowest-priced disposer at my local home improvement store. It's plenty powerful and quiet, probably because of the plastic housing and flexy rubber mounting ring. Time will tell on durability of the plastic grinding chamber - at least it won't rust! GE's mounting system is excellent, fast and secure and allows for easy alignment to trap. Finish on stainless sink flange is very nice, especially for a low-price model. Only drawback is not in product, but in sparsity of wiring directions. First-timers would be well-advised to ask the home store electrical guys what they need and how to hook up. For replacement jobs or the experienced, should be no prob.
Overall, a best buy.

Nice with a caveat
Good news and bad. The good: It is quiet, powerful, and looks good. The bad: It is a disposer only, no cord, no cord hold down, no dishwasher connector. The worst bad is that the sink flange would not unscrew from the support ring. This should be a five second deal. It took over an hour. I used hot water to expand, ice to contract the other side, lubericant to facilitate the unscrewing. Finally, I gave up and put it in my vise and forced it. Of course it broke. I repurposed the broken part with the part from the old disposer. The sink flange was a bit buggered up but it is functional. Did I mention water leaks? If manufacturing would solve these problems it would be a much better disposer.

Just right
Replaced an 11 year old 1/3 hp GE disposal with this 1/2 hp model. Stayed with GE and this model type in order to avoid having to make any plumbing changes. Easily removed the old disposal and put this one in. The only problem I had was lining up the notches on the disposal to the mounting ring. After several attempts I got them together. Also, tightening the mounting ring was difficult. Put some soap or oil on the connection before you attach them. This should make it a little easier to turn the ring. The unit itself is quieter that my old one and being more powerful works better.

Smaller Form Factor - More Cupboard Space
The biggest selling point for me was the smaller size of the unit. I was able to reorganize my under-sink area where an RO water unit takes up a lot of space. Installation was easy, maybe an hour and 45 minutes total mostly spent on cleaning the debris left from the previous disposer. We don't dispose of a lot of food waste this way, but when we do it works efficiently. Not as quiet as a more expensive model, but quieter than what we had before. I installed the same model in my parents house over a year ago and it continues to provide them with superior performance and quality.
