Focal Utopia 2020 Open-Back Over-Ear Headphones with Accessories

The Focal Utopia represents, and I say this without hesitation, the most impressive headphone that I have ever heard. Focal has managed to create something unique, extravagant, and straight-up incredible. And granted, all of that performance, comfort, and luxury does come at a price.

Headphones at a price of about 4,000 Euros are not on your ears every day. With its premium model Utopia, the French high-end manufacturer Focal is putting all its design expertise in speakers into the equation for a product of a higher spec than anything else in their headphones range.

Focal’s Utopia headphones are a bleeding-edge statement from a pedigreed loudspeaker manufacturer that has made the most of its speaker-designing experience.

So the Focal Utopia headphones are arguably a perfect pair — but there’s one other breathtaking thing about these headphones, and that’s the price. Are the worth it? Well, for most, no — but these headphones aren’t built for most.

I waited almost a year to try this headphone, but the wait was undoubtedly worth it. Utopia is the most tonally balanced, resolving and musically involving open-back reference headphone I have thus far auditioned in this price category.

The French loudspeaker specialist Focal made its first entry into the headphone market space some years ago with its original Spirit headphone—a design that was later expanded upon to become an entire range of Spirit models.

Assuming the rest of your signal path is looked after, does it matter if the final stage (your headphones) reaches above and below your hearing range? There are papers and papers that discuss this in depth with varying conclusions; but, in my experience, yes it does.

The Utopia is my favorite headphone having owned the Susvara, TC, SR009S, Raal SR1a, and LCD5 and having heard and reviewed X9000, CRBN, Shang JR, and LCD4. And Headphones dot com are some of the best guys to do business with.

I don’t think I have anything bad to say about the Utopia. Super comfortable and scream elegance. Tonal balance is great for a broad range of genres. I use these to mix and master records so having something as flat as possible is wonderful and these do the job well.

Have tried multiple top tier headphones recently looking for the best pair, and this one just can’t be beat.

From the moment you open the beautiful box, until the moment you place the beautifully constructed frame onto your head, your mouth will be agape. And then you turn the music on, and your mouth hits the floor. Wow. The clarity, the punch, the accuracy...these headphones are arrestingly majestic.

Superb! These headphones are truely superb! I had read numerous reviews and had auditioned Focal's large floorstanding units, so I was familiar with the brand. Even though I haven't completed the 'burn-in' of the headphones, the sound is phenomenal out of the box, details and staging are amazing.

The Utopia is an exceptional headphone and still holds its own in 2022!
