The Epson Home Cinema 5050UB is an update to the 5040UB with important changes including better support for 4K, HDR and better support for gaming with the Xbox One X. I tested out the 5050UB with the Xbox One X and the Apple TV 4K and am very impressed with the quality and the features.

At their current prices—$2,699 for the BenQ HT5550 versus $2,999 for the Epson Home Cinema 5050UB—the 5050UB clearly offers more bang for the buck. But that's not to say its advantages will be meaningful to you or be worth the additional $300 premium.

I prefaced this review stating that Epson's UB line of projectors have traditionally offered high-end features and performance without the high-end price. After spending time with the 5050UB, I found this statement still holds true.

I’ve been using the same Anthem LTX-500 LCoS projector for 10 years now. Only a couple of other displays have challenged it in that time. The Home Cinema 5050UB is now on that list. It is one of the best projectors I’ve ever reviewed and receives my highest recommendation.

Stunning picture, Supreme tweakability, Truly useful HDR adjustments, Excellent contrast and color accuracy

Automatic switching of image modes between SDR and HDR

Comparing Benq’s HT5550 with Epson’s Home Cinema 5050UB is a project I have long been looking forward to. For the first time in years, we have a reasonably priced DLP projector in the $2,000+ range that is a worthy challenger to the latest of Epson’s UB, AKA “ultra black,” projectors.

Epson’s latest UltraBlack model delivers impressive image quality with both standard and Ultra HD/HDR sources at an equally impressive price.

Extended color, Excellent brightness and contrast, Great value

Epson Home Cinema 5050UB 4K Capable Home Theater Projector Review– Summary: Summary, The Competition, The Bottom Line, Pros, Cons
-
+
Bright enough (measured 3000+ lumens) to work in living rooms, family rooms, etc., When paired with the right types of screens, Even more competent in a dedicated home theater, 4K Capable, HDR with P3, Both, Very, Really good gaming, Under, Thanks to 18 GHz HDMI 2.0 with 2.2 HDCP support, Very...

-
Full power mode could be quieter, Medium and Eco are nicely quiet, Slight defocusing as projector warms up, CFI does not work with 4K content, 3D shows a slight amount of ghosting, No wireless HDMI (but the 5050UBe offers that), Could be slightly sharper, Moderately large projector, Not available in...

The Epson Home Cinema 5050UB is a high-quality, great-performing home cinema projector that's built like a beast and while it’s not perfect, it comes pretty close.

Very bright image, Excellent colors, Great HDR performance, Relatively quiet

Relatively expensive, Massive size, Faux-4K

The Epson Pro Cinema 5050UB is a solid choice for a home theater projector. You can pay a lot more money to get just a little bit more performance out of projectors from other brands, and in some cases you give up features or flexibility (lens memory, for example) as well.
I recently upgraded from the 4010 and the expense was well worth it. Outstanding picture quality, colors burst off the screen, definition and lighting are superb. I don't see how Epson could top this product.
I purchased this projector for my Covid basement theater build last summer. I had done tons of research previously and had my heart set on a Sony, but I really couldn't afford $5000 for their base 4K projector.
Let me start by saying I have seen the $7k 4K projector. After trying this light cannon, your eyes can't see the difference at 12ft back on a 120" screen. This projector is incredible! Deep blacks and colors that you'll see for the first time on your favorite films...
We have only had this projector for a few weeks now, but so far it lives up to what we expect for Epson projectors. The new optics do make the image brighter at all color modes, and it has excellent color and sharpness.
I went with the 5050UB to replace a 5030UB, which was suffering from the "persistent cyan line" issue that seemed to plague the 2014/2015 Epson models. The 5050 is slightly larger and heavier, but the mounting locations were identical.

Great picture. Decent price. Very easy to set up. Replaced an older Epson model seamlessly in a ceiling mounted configuration. (Chief RPAU mount.)

Nothing yet.
Had a 5030 and the picture quality from this model is far and above it. Fantastic picture quality. Easy set-up.
Easy setup with easy to set keystone, zoom and lens shift to position image in a way to fill the screen. Fantastic picture quality. Very quiet
Amazing picture quality at a reasonable price!
Great Projector. One of the best for HT - if on a budget go 4010
We love this projector. The contrast and colors on this projector are very impressive. The blacks are black and the colors are vibrant and beautiful. It truly has a superior picture to that of my 4K LED television. The remote also makes it very easy to adjust picture settings for different movies.
