Canon EF 180mm f/3.5L Macro USM is a pretty solid lens. Image performance is pretty good, although not necessarily unique among telephoto lenses. The much cheaper Canon EF 100mm f/2.8 Macro USM can easily match its longer, more expensive brethren in this area.
A lens that is obviously built to last a lifetime of hard work is the way I would describe this optic although the robustness leaves it looking a little chunky. It possibly goes some way to warranting the price, which is high.
Superb build quality., Good optical quality, Good contrast and colour with no distortion
A little heavy., Trapped tripod collar (when on camera), Price
The Canon EF 180mm f/3.5L USM Macro Lens is Canon's longest macro lens . This lens offers the longest 1:1 macro working distance of any Canon lens and produces a beautifully smooth out of focus background .
Even though this 180mm macro lens from Canon costs a fair amount more than the competition, could it be a case of getting what you pay for? The optical quality of this lens cannot be criticised.
Good build quality, Excellent optics, Low falloff, Low CA, Low distortion
Foot on tripod collar may be too short to use with pro bodies, No hood supplied as standard, Price versus performance doesn't add up
This lens is a thing of beauty. Gorgeously made. Fine craftsmanship. Built to last.I'll quickly cut to the chase regarding usage, however. Bottom line, this lens is for the serious macro photographer. Looking to get the closest, most finite details, this is the lens for you.
I am a macro/close-up photographer and have used this lens for several years. After trying to drown my macro system I even purchased a second copy of this lens. I do own the 65mm and 100mm macro lenses but this is my primary macro lens and stays on a 7D Mk II or 5D Mk III.
The biggest complaint is the distinct lateral color (yellow/blue fringes at edges of objects), and that the focus goes past infinity, which seems to be standard sloppy manufacture with AF lenses.
Just GREAT lens. Great! Color rendition is awsome. Bokeh is smooth and silky. It's built like a tank. On Canon 5D the focus tends to hunt IF the limiter is off. On Canon 1D Mk III this is not such a problem. Would be great if this one had an IS built-in.
IQ, IQ, IQ, Tripod Collar, Focal Lenght, Bokeh
No IS, AF*
This is a very, very good lens! It is one of the best lenses I ever owned. As a macro lens it produces stunning blurred backgrounds. It is very sharp from corner to corner wide open provided your subject is perfectly flat and parallel to the sensor.
Sharp wide open from corner to corner, Stopped down even sharper, lovely bokeh, blurred background, build like a tank, tripod ring included
Weight, price, (no IS...?)
before i purchased this lens,i checked out the mtf graph on it ,it looked great,i then read all the reviews on this site about it,they were all positive reviews. so i bought it. this beautiful piece of glass way exceeded my expectations, this lens is razor sharp!!!its stunning.
extremely sharp!sharp!sharp! reproduces colors well, compatible with ef 1.4x & 2x extender. nice tripod collar, well built
none that i could find, some would say the slow autofocus, but as i said above ,who needs fast autofocus on a macro.
This was a gift and I'm certain they are loving it!
Good and sharp ... look up ArtofJCW to see more shots with this lens
Très bonne qualité, rapport prix/$$$ excellent, je recommande ce produit.....!!!
What is there to say about this lens that hasn't been said before. It is a fantastic macro lens if you are a canon shooter. It can hunt for focus a bit at close range on non-contrasty subjects, but is very sharp and a fun lens to shoot with.
