Canon EF 100mm f/2 USM is an outstanding medium telephoto lens that would rival even the most expensive L glass. The lens practically has no weaknesses - excellent image quality, low level of artifacts, fast and accurate AF system, pretty affordable price.

The Canon EF 100mm f/2 USM Lens - meet the Canon EF 85mm f/1.8 USM Lens' twin sibling. Put these two lenses side by side and you will need to read the numbers to tell them apart. That is a good thing. The 100 f/2 shares the Canon EF 85mm f/1.8 USM Lens' solid build quality.

This compact medium telephoto lens sports a fast f/2 aperture, which will make this lens ideal for low light photography or creative use of shallow depth of field. It sports a silent ultrasonic focusing motor, internal focusing and costs around £380.

Those looking for a medium telephoto for portraiture will find this lens a pretty good buy due to the excellent sharpness it is capable of producing and the reasonable price tag.

I am a Nikon shooter, but recently bought a Sony Alpha A6500. Nikon is not the ideal run & gun ecosystem (DSLR) for video. Not very satisfied with Sony's lens line up I looked into Canon...All I can say this is a true gem for photographers looking for a portrait (or people in general) lens.

This lens is very well built, it may not be fully sealed but in my opinion that's the only thing stopping this having a red ring. The lens does not move either the front or rear element for focussing which means it is naturally reluctant to attract moisture or dust internally.

  • +

Fast auto-focus, Superior build quality, Super-sharp images, wide aperture

  • -

    no red ring

This is my favourite astrophotolens. And I use it with success photographing babys in low light situation. You can use in streetphoto without people realising you in fact are zomming in with a 160 mm equivalent mount on a 7D. Recommended!

  • +

A true gem! Sharp wide open. Small.

  • -

    Prone to flares wide open...

I no longer have this lens, but I really enjoyed it while I did. The quality it produces is really excellent. AF is very quick and responsive and it works great in low light. My only complaint is that the build quality could have been better.

  • +

Sharp wide-open, fantastic bokeh, responsive AF, physically a small and compact lens for the focal length.

  • -

    build could be more durable..

I use this for outdoor portraits since it allows me to create nice background blur with my full frame camera. If using a crop body, I'd suggest the 85 or even a 50mm lens.

  • +

Nice bokeh (background blur), quiet and fast focus. No problems after one year.

  • -

You have to use a fast shutter speed or a tripod. A 100 mm lens needs a steady hold.

This lens reminds me of the old days before quailty zooms.Just a fantastic lens. Just puts out one great portrait after the next, Have only used on full frame but I could see how useful it would be as a medimum tele photo on a 1.6 camera/

  • +

Easily Interchangeable, Nice Bokeh, Consistent Output, Lightweight, Durable, Fast / accurate auto-focus

This lens rocks: It is fast, sharp even at f/2.0 and focuses quietly. I do not see any distortion on pictures taken with this lens. Contrast is also very good, while light fall-off is barely noticeable. The bokeh produced by this gem is a joy to see.

    Image quality, size, price.

  • -

It is not weather sealed so some dust may get into the lens.

I shoot fashion, weddings, portraits. This lens is so sharp and so light weight. It's perfect for portraits, and head shots as well as weddings and fashion. I just bought into Canon 5d mk III, love the color love my 50mmf/1.2 but I love this lens almost as much.
